Some do all the time Some do sometimes Some don't (That's the short version). Most TiVo's do if you add an external modem.
This is assuming you have a jitter free cable/dsl connection. If your cable/dsl is congested all bet's are off.
For me: Two DirecTiVo's (Series 1) - both are not having trouble making daily calls.
