3-4 Mb speed burst?

Tonight I am downloading a 500+ MB file from Fileplanet and on occasion I am getting speed bursts in the 3-4 Mb range. Any one else see this?

Chuck

At home with Comcast I download at a steady 3.3Mbps, but at my girlfriend's house (DSLi ADSL) she downloads at a constant 1.3Mbps.

Elias, if you don't mind my asking, how much are you paying Comcast? How reliable has their service been and how long did you have to wait to get it? How's their news service? I am sick and tired of being cut off when all I do is read text-based newsgroups. It's the 13th DSLi has already cut off newsgroup service for the month.

Finally, does Comcasty block any ports?

You can get unlimited access to text newsgroups you want for free here:

»news.individual.net/

I'll have to check the bill, I'm not sure how much it costs.

The service has been ultra reliable. Getting it didn't take long, but I acquired service back when it was still MediaOne. So I have no idea how that works these days.

I don't really used NewsGroups, but I think there's a limit. The limit is per user, though. And since you get 5 user accounts with service, I think it's the limit x 5.

I don't believe they block ports. At some point I think they did, but maybe it was because of Code Red/Nimda or something. I don't seem to have any problems with ports being blocked.

The downside is that you don't get a static IP per se. You get a sticky IP, but that usually lasts about 6 months.

I have tried that twice and they never got back to me. Interestingly, newsgroups stopped asking for authentication and just started magically working after posting this. Hmmmmm...

Thanks for the good info. I am in the process of evaluating whether to stay with DSLi. While the service is pretty good, there is room for improvements. For instance, their DNS servers could use some work and newsgroup service also seems spotty.

For instance, currently I cannot get to a bunch of pages:

When I ssh into a server that I look after at a community center, I can pull these pages without any problems.

I was running my own DNS servers up until two weeks ago when I needed to put that machine to better use. And the

I get to both pages just fine.

I'm at work, and we have a T1 through DSLi.
