NEW Speedstream 5200 keeps dropping Ethernet

So, I got the new Speedstream and plugged it in. Works great when it is hooked up straight to my computer. When I try to hook it up through my router, the problems begin.

Everything is configured properly, I've double and triple checked it. What keeps happening though is anytime I try to do something through the net the ethernet light on the speedstream 5200 turns off. This doesn't happen with the direct connection to the computer. I've tried locking the ip on my computers but to no avail. I'm sure it's something simple, but I can't figure it out. The speedstream has the newest firmware 004-E242-A0J and I am using a SMC7004VBR with the newest firmware as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

There is no reason that would happen unless it's no longer properly connecting to the router. Since you say it works fine on direct connect. Nothing more I can say really, check the router.

Is there anything specifically I should check with the router? The router works fine with a cable modem. It has never dropped the cable modem's link. I've tried switching the ethernet cable too, but no help.

Are you using the same Ethernet cables to test both cable modem and dsl? If not try swapping.

I had a new ethernet wire for between the modem and router, which I have tried and it doesn't work. For the hell of it I tried the ethernet wire that I use for the cable modem, and it also doesn't work. I'm thinking it's a setting in either the router or modem, but not sure what setting it would be.

if worked with router on cable and now doesnt on dsl with router you might want to go over router setting and make sure its set for a pppoe connection

Would that be related to the light going completely out? As far as I know the config is just that.. config.. the way network cards work the damn light should stay on regardless.

Correct me if I'm wrong, flame me if you want.

Since the 5200 is a router as well as a modem, if I set my router to PPPoE, I get nothing! I have to set it as a direct connection, since the 5200 sends a direct connection from itself.

The light I'm refering to is on the Speedstream, 2nd light from the left labelled Ethernet. I noticed that whenever either of my computers on my network requested the internet, the light would turn off and then there would be a pause and no data would be transferred until several seconds after when the light reappeared. This does not happen on the speedstream when it is directly connected to my computer.

The 2nd from the left or 2nd from the right? I've got a DSL light on the 2nd from the left. I have, in order PWN DSL USB ENET.

Hi DFlash77
You are correct. Using PPPoE both on 5200 and on other router at the same time won't work. That is a conflict.

Since you are using 5200 as a router. You can treat the smc7004vbr as a hub. Try to connect the ethernet port to 1 of the 4 port on the smc7004vbr to see what happen.

Mine is Power Ethernet DSL USB Activity

I was looking at a post from another member and he mentioned that the 5200 can be configured through this link:

»192.168.2.1/vcwizardj.cg ··· ode=HOME

Does anyone know if there is a manual which describes what all the options are?

VPI = 0 VCI = 35

Leave everything else the way it is.

Choose PPPoE and then Client Only

don't specify an IP, name your connection, type the user and pass, finish and then reboot.

I knew it was a simple solution! Thank you maginnovisio! It worked.

lol Sometimes you forget about the simple solutions! I knew the 5200 acts as a router, but I was treating it as a modem! So I was still feeding it into my Wan port of my router. Well I'm glad I'm up and running again and all my computers can function as well!

Take care!

You are welcome.

I don't think there is anything wrong by using the Wan port. It should function in the same way.

Maybe u make some mistake somewhere in the smc7004 web configuration. Or somehow your smc7004 wan port is having some problem.

Hello, I just received my SpeedStream 5200 modem and I'm in a similar situation, ie. I have 2 computers connected to an SMC 2404 router which will connect to the 5200 modem. I'm currently with Rogers and the cable modem was a breeze to setup but it looks like Sympatico may be a little more complicated.

I have a few questions :

1. Since PPPoE is already available in the modem, do I actually have to install any of Sympatico's software (comes on a CD with the modem) to connect to Sympatico via a router, or can I just enter my user/pass into the modem using the built-in http based config utility mentioned in this thread?

2. If I plug the 5200 into the phone jack all by itself (no connections to a router or PC) will the DSL light come if there's sync? According to Sympatico my line card is not yet installed so I was thinking of doing this so I will know when the line card has been installed (ie. DSL light will go on).

Hi Tietvel

1. It is not necessary to install any of the Sympatico's software. You can just enter the user/pass into the modem using the built-in http based config.

2. The 5200 DSL light should turn on when the line is sync. Bell will probably leave you a notice when they activated the service. If the DSL light didn't turn on. Try to turn off the modem then back on.
