gwionwild colonial boyPremium,ExMod 2001-08 join:2000-12-28 Pittsburgh, PA kudos:1 2 edits | Adelphia... ... has "disgusted subscribers" as a feature of their anti-sat ads... and... uh... where do we draw a line?
- Most DTV subs, here, are promos. Everybody I've talked with got a free dish, and multiple free tuners, with their contract. ZERO "hidden fees"... pushed as a "given" by Adelphia.
- Likewise, my neighbors all got local channels in the package, the idea of "extra for locals" is a dying practice. It just cost too many subscribers. Although I, personally, have no problem with a TV antenna. What, an antenna's "declasse" or sumthin'? You already have a dish out there...
- Moreover, the folks around me with DTV are paying around 30 bucks for around 70 channels; Adelphia charges 50 for around 55. Most of which are inundated with Adelphia-sold advertising, and are "split" to paid programming during "off-hours." This gets conveniently glossed over...
Bottom line, where does "hyperbole" become a "lie"?
Obviously, subjective observations are "hype," not "lies"... I dwelt on a brief (very) synopsis of objective inaccuracies, above... but here's a subjective one... cable: your best value? For whom? Obviously... now I get it... the owners of the cableco!!! Ain't hype grand?
This is "economic rape." The charges the cablecos are shoving down the throats of their monopoly markets are nothing less. Standard Oil of old is blushing --- they're being outdone, by a cable industry with a preferred legislative and regualtory status left over from the seventies, that makes their "monopolies" not only monopolies, but "legislatively created, endorsed and sanctioned" monopolies.
[PS- note that cable is generally one of the highest monthly bills, over water, equal to or greater than electricity, over all the other fixed costs we all face monthly with the possible exception of electricity for those in warm climates, or gas and heating oil for those in cold ones. Is this product worth THIS kind of money, considering the amount of money the cableco makes, in addition to you sub fees, from adverts, those split channels, and all that? Have we decided that "entertainment," at any cost, without question or protest, in a societal sense, has a "far" greater value than "survival services?" As Spock might observe... "illogical... but fascinating."]
When your local cable contract comes up for renewal, stand up and demand that your local leaders refuse any contract that includes an exclusivity clause. Reject it like bologna rejects the grinder... it's an artifact of the past. These guys aren't struggling for acceptance and survival, any longer. They're big, fat, staggering hogs, in a world where piggies get fat... and hogs should be slaughtered. -- Semper Eadem

However, in my case, I have 5 TVs. In order to go with DirecTV, I have to have 5 receivers. With all the additional fees adding up, it is way more than to stick with Comcast cable. | | gwionwild colonial boyPremium,ExMod 2001-08 join:2000-12-28 Pittsburgh, PA kudos:1 | Right, and I understand fully... I'm not saying DTV doesn't have drawbacks, just that the hyperbole from their side, versus the hyperbole (er... downright lies) coming out from the CTV camp doesn't square. I agree, and admit, I sometimes take for granted people know satellite requires a special tuner, and that's really not fair, from me or DTV... the typical offer, around here, is 2-3 tuners for the price of one... obviously, a promo, no doubt about it, but better than ala carte, and not being addressed by the CTV folks. Disinformation is the word for the commercials... from both sides, but from CTV's side, it strikes me CTV is "more sinning than sinned against."
Just as an FYI, by the way, it's entirely possible to have a C or Ku (DTV) band satellite receiver and drive 1, 5, 10 sets from it on the same program; however, to have individual tuning, you DO need a receiver at each set. Well taken, and thanks. -- Semper Eadem

I also think it is a crock of s*it that TWC charges me $6.95 a month for the first digital box and $5.95 a month for each additional. I can understand charging for additional boxes, but the first box should be a given and included in the price of my digital access. | |
