SMC7004VWBR 3 IPS ??Ok so I have the Wireless Router which is the SMC7004VWBR, and a Wireless USB Adapter *SMC2662W) which is on my second comp. Both comps are running Windows XP Professional SP2. everything is hooked up perfectly both comps have internet at a good speed about 3 mb .. depending on the day. I go check the setup page (» 192.168.2.1) and in the DHCP Client Log Box, I see 3 IPS. 2 of them I recognize because its my computer and the second computer, but the 3rd I have no clue who it is.. and I'm guessing someone is using my internet and having a freeride or something. DHCP Server: Enabled Firewall: Disabled UPnP: Enabled Wireless: Enabled may'b I should change something above? Can anyone help? I want to get rid of that 3rd IP.. any settings which can help me block off that IP? thnx! - Ben |

Enable WEP (preferably 128bits) if you have not already done so. Enable also the MAC control while you are at it, again if you have not already done so. |

More thoughts, MAC Control is applicable for both Wired and Wireless Routers, so when you apply MAC Address filtering. Ensure that you have added the MAC address of both Wired and Wireless Computers. |

Looks like you got someone using your internet.Like other said setup WEP and MAC Filter, you could also change the SID name and channel. |

SSID ID can be easily found if it is broadcasting. Also I don't think you need to mind about channel, as all the client computers would connect to any channel. I think a true security doesn't exist in Wireless. You can have sneaking softwares to crack WEP and spoof MAC Address to a legitimate one. You can of course have 1. Encryption - WEP. However WPA is preferred over WEP. In this case, the 7004VWBR V2 supports WPA but not the Adapter. 2. MAC Address Filtering 3. Disabling SSID Broadcast. These settings doesn't offer complete security. But goes in line with, implementing some security is better than NO security. |

Assuming this is a version-2 VWBR, under the Firewall section there's an enable/disable choice. Once it's enabled, more options appear on the left, one of which is MAC filtering. In this section, add the MAC addresses of every valid network card (wired AND wireless), which can usually be found on a sticker on your card. These addresses will be the ones which are allowed to access your network. (I'm at the office right now, but these menu picks are the ones that pop into mind. Doublecheck me on these).
Down at the bottom of the MAC page, you can also pick from a list of cards that the router already knows about (from its DHCP server) to save you some typing.
Finally, if you have a machine for which you can't see the MAC address sticker, at a Windows command prompt, do IPCONFIG /ALL and the MAC address of any network adapters will be displayed (amongst a ton of other things).

No worry - those are WAN-side messages. The VWBR is blocking outside access attempts, just like it should.
I get 'em all day. They're probably trojan attempts from people with unpatched PCs. |
