Pupak join:2001-01-24 Hyde Park, NY 1 edit | WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con I've had WGR614v4 for about 2 months and the router consistently loses connection to the cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB4200 with Optimum Online) every 4 days.
When it happens, my LAN continues to work OK but I have no connection out to the Internet. The only thing that fixes the problem is power cycling the router.
Is there anything I can do in the router or modem setup that would allow me to keep my network connected more than 4 days at a time?
Netgear support calls this bug a feature. |

 | Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN You're not the only one with this problem. I have the same problem with my WGR614v3 Netgear router using Adelphia broadband service. The only difference between my scenario and yours is that my router loses connection after approximately a day and a half. I, too, have to "reboot" my router to regain my Internet connection. Had I known this would happen this often, I would have bought a Linksys 802.11g wireless router instead of a Netgear! Unless someone comes up with a "fix" for this problem, I may just scrap the Netgear router and switch to Linksys anyway. Their routers are cheap enough now to easily warrant a swap out. Also, has anyone been able to successfully upgrade the firmware in this damned thing? If so, please let me know how! On a final note, my feelings are that unless Netgear improves their support very soon, I foresee their business folding within 3 to 5 years.

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con I have been almost pulling my hair out over the same problem. My rp614v2 router loses connection to my cable modem (motorola sb5100) about every 10 hours or so. I have tried every possible remedy:
Power cycling router works for 10 hours. Swapping network cards, cables changes nothing. Lowering mtu to various levels between 1200 and 1500 does nothing. Upgrading/downgrading all available firmware does nothing. Entering isp ip, dns, gateway addresses manually into router config does nothing. Entering router ip, dns, gateway addresses manually into windows tcpip config does nothing. Releasing/renewing ip of modem->router does nothing. Releasing/renewing ip of router->computer does nothing. |

 | I'm using the WGR614v4 with 5.02 firmware. I bought the router about 2 weeks ago and I have not lost my WAN connection. I am connecting to DSL via PPOE and DHCP. So far so good.
This has been much better than my Linky 4 port router as I did lose the connection to the internet on 3 of 4 pc's every 2 days. On the Linky I had to reboot the computers to restore the internet connection. Very weird!
My Netgear has been rock solid since I installed it. I have 4 pc's connected via Cat5 and one laptop via wireless G. |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN Oddly enough, I had this same problem with my Sohoware NGB800 router and Adelphia. I would have to power cycle the router once every 1-2 weeks. BUT, since I replaced the Sohoware with a WGR614 v1, the problem went away. -- Yes I am a Pirate, 200 years too late. Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con Check the Linksys forum before jumping ship. I just came from that way. It is not the router. I am on number 3 with the same problem as you. |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN I had a similar problem with my Motorola SB5100 and WGR614v4 with Charter service... I would lose a connection after 20 mins and would power cycle to get back on. I turned on the feature to allow pinging and no connection problems since. I actually got that out of a much more useful L2 tech! |
|
 | reply to Pupak I am having the same problem with the Netgear. However to avoid power cycling you can connect to the Router, chose Router Status, goto Connection Status and select Renew Connection. This renegotiates the DHCP and DNS with your ISP. |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con Same problem with my WGR614v4.
I bought my netgear router because I have had absolutely no problems in the past with thier products (a FS105 and several different NICs).
All I know is
1) WGR614v4 is a piece of SH*T. & 2) that if netgear dosent fix this within a couple of months, im taking my money elsewhere (aka LINKSYS). |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN I think the problem is only seen by users connecting a WGR614v4 to a direct broadband modem, i.e. Modem not running NAT! Am I right? I have a friend who recommended the Netgear and has never had a problem with this version of the hardware and the only difference is that he has NAT on his modem and I don't. Therefore his Modem deals with the DHCP Lease Renew messages and not the Netgear. Netgear support are very slow, will not be recommeding this router to anyone. |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con i also have the netgear wgr614 & wg511 card for the laptop. i have to say that for the desktop (duh!) the setup is flawless but for the laptop it is a pita. when it does connect (using wpa security) it performs well, but when it loses the connection, typically after an hour or so of hibernation on the laptop, it takes a virtual act of congress to get the thing to connect. sometimes a reboot does it; sometimes, for god knows what reason it takes multiple reboots. perhaps all wireless setups have such problems but i can tell you that my previous setup (microsoft 802.11b not wpa) was flawless in supporting the laptop. never had connections problems. netgear support staff in india is unfailingly polite but clearly reading from scripts. bub |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN Did anyone ever actually figure this out? Mine is doing the same thing and I'd love some help. |

 | hey anyone noticed that just about everyone talking about this router has a motorola cable modem..... maybe that is where the problem herein lies...... i used to have a dlink 624+ same problem..... took it back and got the netgear and still get the same problem..... i too have a motorola modem so maybe thats the prob anyone not got a motorola and still gett the problem |

 | I'm not going to say "I have an answer", but I'll tell you the short story. I bought a WGR614 and it kept dropping WLAN connectivity (required a reboot of the WAP). I read the threads and figured I would chance the 5.0_02. Once flashed, my DNS lookups were SO TERRIBLE, I flashed back and starting making plans to pack it up and take it back. However, I read a thread talking about removing all connections prior to the flash - I've never heard of that actually having an impact, but I figured why not...I was taking the thing back anyway. I removed all the hard-line connects and turned off the wireless and re-did the flash - and now it's great! No drops, and no sluggishness...You be the judge for yourself, but for me it worked great! |

 | By flashed, you mean before updating the firmware or what? |

sfcircle join:2004-09-16 San Francisco, CA | I am a moron and posted this in the wrong wgr614 post, duh. Geez the wgr 614's are really taking a dive. anyway here is my post:
Also having this problem. I have a wgr614 v3 and was using it with earthlink dsl. It would drop the connection almost everyday so I would unplug it and the plug it back in. Then one day nothing worked so I just took the netgear off the line and hooked the computer (mac g5) back to the dsl modem box and of course everything works again.
This was my husbands computer and I was using it to be wireless on my laptop. He was not happy with these daily drops so I have now ordered dsl extreme for my phone line and hoping my netgear will work better, but am not hopeful.
very frustrating. |

 | reply to Pupak There has to be some kind of fix to this, right? Has anyone had any success with the above suggestions? |
|
 | reply to Rockarollr Do not do it, I am ahving the exact same issue with my new linksys. Drop-offs and now no dhcp. |
|
 | reply to Rockarollr Same problem.
FWG114P.
Newest firmware, Motorola modem, cable internet.
Netgear suggest resetting the MTU, which only half-worked. I need a solution or an RMA from Netgear. |

After 24 h the router needs a reset (after 24 hours my provider does a disconnect!). The only way is to reconnect before 24 hours! Wrote a perl script, which does the job!
But fixing the router would be much smarter! |
