Re: Final solution to WGR614 problems Pupak, funny you should say that. I baught the 614 because the dlink 524 would not stop disconnecting (any firmware.. its now collecting dust. Would have returned it but the sale price was worth it for the pc card that came with it alone, so I plan to sell the dlink once a working firmware is made for it) wifi users.
BTW I did have a problem with my netgear, the wifi would just flat out die and require a reboot, upon which the cable modem had to be rebooted because for some odd reason, the router couldnt reget the ip from it (it couldnt even talk to the cable modem). How ever i found this was due to over heating, the bottem gets 3x hotter then the top and laying it down causes it to heat up way to much to run stable. Now after setting it verticle it's working fine with no reboot in over a week. |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN When I first got Earthlink, they gave me an option of a static IP address. At the time I opted for a dynamic one. Any thoughts on a static IP solving the lease renew/release problem? Just wondering. |

 | reply to rexque rexque is right about one solution: entering specific DNS addresses in the router instead of relying on DHCP helps prevent missed domain lookups (i.e., "domain not found").
There's no apparent reason why this should help, since I'm only entering the same DNS addresses that are already shown as assigned by DHCP in the router Connection Status. But it does help, and immediately.
My guess is that the WGR614 has a firmware bug that prevents it from flushing the address lookup cache properly when the DHCP-assigned values change. That could be when the lease expires, or in my case when I switch the uplink cable between different ISPs and then do a Release/Renew on the router.
I'm running a v4 with the latest posted firmware from Netgear. |
|
 | I have WGR614v5 and the newest 107 firmware and I experienced the same problem.
Cable modem pings, NetGear pings, nothing outside pings, even when I just type the IP address of some site.
The drops happen erratically. Very annoying. ----------
I used the following things and got it working.
In the process I am not sure which one of the changes was responsible, but I am not touching anything anymore.
Basic settings:
+ Internet IP Address: Get Dynamically from ISP (as it is by default)
+ Domain Name Server
+ Use These DNS Services: (copy the values that you can obtain from the Maintenance/Router Status page) This is not the culprit for dropped connections but will make your DNS lookups faster.
Set the MAC to your computer's MAC (in case you used the computer before). Your ISP might be filtering by MAC and not allow any other devices.
Advanced/WAN Setup: + Connect Automatically, as Required (as it is by default)
+ Respond to Ping on Internet Port I believe Comcast verifies your activity occasionally and reassigns the IP to someone else if they see you're not using it.
LAN IP Setup:
+ RIP Direction: In Only (in case the cable modem router wants to impart some info)
- Use Router as DHCP Server (yes, disable DHCP) This is not the culprit for most of the drops but disabling this will make your wireless laptop's connections be more stable in places where you get bad signal.
X Set your laptops/computers IP address manually Specify 192.168.1.1 (wireless router address) as gateway and also as DNS (the wireless router will forward this to the ISPs DNS, if neccessary).
------ Turn off Netgear, turn off Cable Modem, turn off all switches (if you have them... this will flush their ARP cache). Disconnect Ethernet cables from the cable modem.
Wait 1 minute. Turn on cable modem. Wait 2 minutes. Plug in the Wireless Router into Cable Modem. Turn on the Wireless Router Wait 2 minutes. Turn on your computers. (make sure they have the manual IP, gateway, DNS set correctly).
So far I had uptime of half a day, no dropped connections yet. Before these changes, my connection would drop every 10-45 minutes. |

 | reply to Pupak Has there been any progress from anyone on this issue. I just bought a WGR614v5 2 weeks ago and have had to reboot the router twice to re-establish WAN with the Motorola 5100 modem. Have tried all the suggestions mentioned and waiting to see if it happens again. Any success stories or further ideas appreciated. |

 | reply to drew123123123 I had a problem with power cycling my netgear router about once a week until Comcast replaced my cable modem with a Motorola, now it's about 6 times a day. I don't think that Netgear likes the Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem. [Surfboard]
Problem is if I complain to comcast they state I should buy their equipment if I want to share my internet connection on my home network. (and pay more per month)
When I complain to Netgear they say, The need to Power Cycle the product is normal, and required in some instances.
I have had similar issues and responses from Linksys, which is why I purchased a netgear this last time. The netgear worked better with my previous modem than did the Linksys, then my ISP switched out my cable modem and the Netgear is having an issue with the new one. Maybe I'll try a DLINK? |

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con Right - I too had a Belkin, and my HP 5850 got a DHCP address no problem. Then got the netgear router and can not get a wireless or ethernet DHCP no matter what I do. Will try to assign manually. |
|
lq @attbi.com | oh - And I meant to add, I do not have the 'reserve address' feature turned on, and the DHCP problem still exists. |
|
 | reply to Pupak Well, this is what I finally did. My lease lasts about 1.5 days. I bought a digital lamp timer (not the dial kind, but a digital one). I set the off time to 3:59am and the on time 4:00am. HAVENT HAD A PROBLEM YET, after 2 weeks. |

The issue lies with your cable modem. Log into it and disable its DHCP. Essentially you want the Modem to act as a Bridge and not a router (which the WGR614 is doing for you).

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN After reading through this thread I'm sweating bullets. Four hours ago I connected a Netgear WGR614v4 (1.07) to a Motorola SB5100 w/ Comcast cable internet. Previously I've been using XP ICS and have never had a disconnect in 6 months. If this setup shows any funkiness, I'm building a linux router. Will report back in a few days.

 | reply to Pupak It's been three days and I've had zero problems with my setup. Granted, my main computer is wired, not wireless, but the router has not caused any problems.
As a bonus, I found out yesterday that comcast upgraded my service from 3000/256 to 4000/384. Hell yeah! That extra upstream will come in handy.

 | reply to happyhelper I cannot believe so many people have the same problem and no one can find a cause.
I want however put extra input on this discussion. I want to give my scenario and get some constructive replies.
I have a WGR614v5 upgraded to the latest ROM version (1.07_1.06). I have had the same problem for about 1 month. However, when I 1st bought the router I did not have any problems for over 2 months. About a 6 weeks ago Time-Warner, my cable provider, blocked the MAC address of the router and I had to switch the MAC address to that of the computer. Shortly after that I installed Advance Server 2000 on my computer and started running a web page. Then all hell broke loose. I would loose the connection every time the internet IP lease expired. This is very frequently but there is no set timing. Sometimes is 2hrs and sometime is 4 or anything in between it all depends on Time-Warner. (I think they do it on purpose to bother people.)
Time-Warner replaced the modem and unblock my router. (It seems they want to be told if you have a router.) I replaced the NIC and I even slowed the connection to 10M but nothing seems to help this dropping problem.
I found that my AS2000 was killing the connection every now and then and sometimes it was killed by another host. Except that I only have 1 server on my LAN. For whatever reason AS2000 saw my computers running XP as servers so I wonder if any of them could be killing the connection.
My solution is to remove AS2000 and go back to W2K, but I want to be able to run the server.
Could all of these drops be blamed on Microsoft? Is there something that MS is doing or not doing that kills the router? Why is it that removing AS2000 from the LAN eliminates the problem? Is the cable company killing the connection because they don't want a server on line?
Is interesting that the latest ROM version for this router is supposed to fix "... a situation where router hung after a long period of use" but it does not.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated. |

MikDee join:2005-04-09 Milford, PA | Has anyone found a cure for this problem of constant dropouts from this router? (WTG614v5) Can I use ping enabled as it seems to go longer without a problem, or is this causing harm? or a security breech? Thanks Mike |

 | Just saw this this evening and reading all the posts. I have a different model MR814v3. Have had it a couple days, and so far I have to unplug it once a day. Not a big deal really... unless Im downloading something and Im not there. But if I am, it cuts out anyway. So its not an idle thing.
Also its happened a couple times when Im on YIM. Oh... its DSL and a speedstream modem. Its a static IP with no login or password. So... is it really a cable modem thing? Considering I dont have one?
No DHCP. No wireless. No automatic DNS. Since no password, No option to change idle time. DNS not set to ISP in the computer... just 192.168.0.1 Mac Address added in with computer IP, 192,168.0.2 Connects Automatically. Default router Mac Address. But I dont have to authenticate with one with my ISP.

 | Hi,
The issue is VERY similiar to those of who have the WGT624 series of wirelesss routers. Seemingly many folks also have this issue of dropped internet connections; I know I do/did.
Following another link from these forums, i went to the Netgear user forums where one of the posters put forth the theory that the dropps are caused by the Router overheating due to several design factors including possible flaky power supplies (PUT your router on your UPS backup unit) and lack of a fan to cool down the insides of these routers. He followed up with a tutorial for adding a fan to a Netgear router (any warranty is voided !!) but he claims no more drops !!
Following his logic, I took the slightly less agressive path since my router is already in a vertical position, I opened it up and removed both "end caps" so their is nothing holding the heat in the router case anymore.
YES you can feel heat coming off the top of the router. AND Since doing this, I have had no more resets; granted it has only been a couple days so far, but my router was resetting at least every day or so, so I would have expected a couple drops by now. I am optimistic !!
Sorry I dont have the specific link to the netgear forum, but it is referenced in another thread on DSLREPORTS Netgear forum under an item for the WGT624.

Re: WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con OK guys, a lot of stuff is talked about here but I'm almost positive the cause of the originating problem "WGR614 does not renew DHCP lease and loses WAN con" is a KEEP ALIVE feature in your modem. For all those cussing netgear, it's not the router, it's just the default settings on the way it's shipped. Maybe that's good enough reason to cuss them, I dunno. A lot of modems now, mine included, use a "KEEP ALIVE" ping to authenticate service. Change the setting in your router's security options to allow the internet port to be pinged and, Vola, no more manual DHCP renews. You should also be able to fix this problem by opening UDP Port 65000(possibly the only solution if you're running a software router such as a linux box). What sux though, is now you can be hit with a DDoS attack. You'll have to complain to your ISP about that. And since your real IP address is on the router (your computer's IP address is only a fake translated one) installing software firewalls etc... on your PC will be utterly fruitless unless worried about machines on your same network (LAN).
Also, if your router will not renew DHCP at all (even manually) your modem is most likely bound to ur PC's or old router's MAC address. If it's your pc's then just tell the router to cloan the MAC on the main settings page. If it's an old router, however, it's a little trickier. You'll have to unplug your modem (not router) from the AC outlet for a certain time span. I have heard some people say they can unplug then right away plug back in and have it work while others say they've had to leave their modem unplugged all night before it would unbind from the last MAC. You might also be able to type in the old MAC manually into the router's setup page. Again, you need to cuss your ISP for these complications, not the brand of router. And please please please make sure 1st your cable from your modem is plugged in your router's WAN port (not any of the lans) and that u have a link light. Also make sure it's the right wiring scheme. If you don't have a link light then none of the above will help whatsoever. |

 | Here is some support that it is not the router. I have the Netgear WGR614 have had it for almost a year. NO PROBLEMS. My ISP is Earthlink with the netopia modem. My router, not my modem, acts as the DCHP. I do not have a static IP address. As a mater of fact I use NO-IP to fake a static IP for my business.
Here is something that I did come across that my be the problem. I have 4 machines on my network and one game adaptor, two have netgear adaptors, 2 Lynksys, and one built in. I have a mixed network, some b and some g.
The WGR614 boast speeds of 108mbp. That only happens when you have the software setup (with the adaptor), to do this. If you are getting drooped, you may have your router set up as a g or 108only network. Unless you know for sure that you have a g card or a netgear adaptor that supports 108 you can't use that feature.
Also, after you install the software for the adaptor, don't use the software to access the network, use windows. I hate to say that, but again unless you have EXACTLY the same 108 protocall you cant use that feature and it will disconnect your connection.
Hope this helps. Again, I have not had any issues with my Netgear, even with power outages, and a two year old pushing buttons. I LOVE this router.
