SBC and earthlink teased the area my parents lived in, saying DSL was availible in their area, when it wasnt. comcast HSI was a pipe dream. fast forward to present day, and both broadband options are there.

They are offering 15MB down and 2 MB at 49 bucks a month. They will take the broadband market by force and couse a monopoly if the DSL and cable providers done upgrade to the new standards to come.
