A firewalled network access point (read: a high-end router with a built-in packet filter, or roll your own with BSD or Linux and an old machine) would not only be cheaper, it would probably be simpler and far, far more elegant... and PC firewalls like the old 2.x versions of Kerio can forward logs to another computer (lots like most SOHO routers do), be remotely accessed and have fairly sound password protection.
