cable vs dsl

It's interesting to read the posts in here; most of Insight's customers seem to like the small speed increase. The small community I live in just outside of Insight's large area is still at 512 down / ~ slowwww upstream speeds. This is a company that provides service for several small towns around the larger one. Granted, the price is right at $25/mo bundled with user owned modem, but for about $12 more, I recently switched to SBC dsl for a HUGE difference, getting about 2.45 / 355 on the 3.0 / 384 Pro package.

I use a full 24 channel T1 at work, 1.544 down and up, and this dsl is very similar in responsiveness. By this, I mean that the cable systems have a definite lag between request and response that is much more pronounced than either dsl or T1 connections. I have also used Insight's cable feed and see the same response, although for larger downloads it is definitely faster.

I suppose it comes down to what you do with your connection that makes more difference than just raw speed. IMO, SBC dsl is an excellent compromise between speed and response, and it looks like I'm paying less than the majority of the Insight customers that post here.

I've heard about an upcoming speed increase at least with the upstream on our SBC dsl here, should help such applications as gaming and hosting.

I must agree with some who are of the opinion that the phone and cable companies are "holding back" their available bandwidth. It seems like they are trickling out these "upgrades" just to stay a half-step ahead of the competition for a few months until the other guy ups the ante a bit on their side.

Poker, anyone?
