Back Orifice Questions

psalms 139 : I had to do a system restore then went on to re apply all my software on my comp. Just yesterday I put spybot back on my reformated computer and ran it. Came up with Back orifice which i fixed.
I am wondering though, can something like back orifice stay on after I do a complete system restore, reformat the disk and all?
And I've never had that before. I did not use email so I guess I picked it up by going to an infected web address. Any info on this would be appreciated
