Re: [OT] Anyone have SBC satellite TV here? I just got Dish Network through SBC and being in Fairfield County (just barely) we can only get NY local stations right now. What should I include in the letter to the local station(s) to help getting accepted. We really only need one station, and a few bucks a month is worth it IMO. So, any specific info I should include or address the letter to? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!
Edit: according to something called SHVIA (enacted 1999) I should call my dish company (?). However, they only will do this if I do not qualify at all for any "local" stations according to their website. Am I up a river or is there a way to still try? |

Major bummer! I'm in Bethel.
My Comcast bill has gone through the roof and I'm looking for an alternative. But we absolutely, positively MUST have CPTV and the Hartford/New Haven local network (CBS, NBC, etc) stations. I don't watch the New York stations at all. With cable the CT stations are all there but can I get them in Fairfield County on DTV or any other satellite? You're telling me no.
CPTV is number one, channel 30 is 2, channel 3 is number 3, but all are "above the line." Without them I won't consider it. And an antenna is not possible .. I have a ridge to the east that will block anything from that direction. I'd need a one hundred foot antenna to even think about it.
Choices and decisions ....

 | reply to cyboex19 my suggestion to you is this: Drop your cable package down to basic cable(pretty much locals only) for around 10-12.00 a month, then get the appropriate DirecTV or Dish package for your needs. You can get the satellite packages w/o locals because you'll be getting them through your cable. that saves about 4-6 dollars on the sat bill. i know quite a few people that do this in areas such as yours. just a thought. good luck. remember this, you pay an additional sales tax(5%) in CT for sat tv. Which means you need to tack on 11% in tax, to whatever package you choose. I was a diehard Comcast digital cust. for years, until I switched to DirecTV 2 years ago. I'll never go back to cable. Just the picture quality off the satellite was enough to keep me as a customer. to me, it was like night and day. |

2 edits | The only cable company around is Tele-Media, and the bare-bones cable rate is $24.75/mo (although something odd is going on as their "Broadcast basic" is 25 cents more than "expanded basic" (???). They do not offer a local channels only option.

 | reply to cyboex19 Hi You guys Should look into DirecTV. I live in Oxford and get all the Ct locals. I have several friends In Valley that Get the CT locals also with direct. I pay $42.99 for the Total Choice plus with locals. I believe it Totals 125 Channels.
I would NEVER go to Cable. They cannot compare With Satellite.

 1 edit | reply to cyboex19 that's a rip. comcast's is only 12.95 i believe.
i live in wallingford, and get the ct locals through directv, but i also get the NY & LA feeds from fox, and nbc. i got denied abc, and cbs. they just wouldn't budge. i applied for a waiver, called, wrote letters, etc. they just won't give in. fox and nbc gave me a waiver within a week or so of applying. i pay an additional 2.25 per channel(not including the 11% sales tax) i like the la feeds, cause everything is 3 hours behind. if you miss something thats on the locals, i can view it later if i choose to. i'd call dish or direc tv to see if there's something they could help you with. it's worth the call. good luck. IM me if you need any help. good luck. |

 | reply to black knight DirecTV also places Shelton in the NYC DMA, meaning they'd give us the same stuff. BUT, otherwise, we like what we see. Cable CANT compare with satellite! |

3 edits | reply to wyatt9696 Yea, we know Tele-Media's a rip... that's why we canned them
We'll try calling Dish, and see what they say... its annoying with NY channels because even the weather maps barely show us, and of course the weather forcasts are for NYC (sometimes completely different). How do you apply for a waiver? Thanks for the help...
Wish me luck...
Edit: According to the guy at Dish Network, even though the "beam" satellite could reach me, because I'm in the NYC DMA (in Connecticut!!!) I don't qualify for those stations, and therefore cannot apply for a waiver. Is this true or are they playing games? Help, anyone? |

 | reply to Rungel There is one more thing to realize about having NYC locals. NYC is the major east coast feed for directv. That means that it has some advantages. First is that if Directv decides to release a local channel in HD, than it would be available right away for customers with the east/west feeds, but not to the local customers because they would have to approve it, which they won't. Why is that? Because directv would broadcast your local channel, plus the east coast feed(for those on the east coast), which would basically be granting a waiver for all customers, and we know that the local stations would not be happy about it, so it's probably never going to happen. We ffld county customers who get NYC locals have HD feeds available to us if we want it. Granted, right now it is only CBS that is available. |

1 edit | reply to Rungel Speaking of satellite and tax in CT, there is a bill currently sitting unsponsored in the state Congress to repeal this tax. I recommend writing to your local Congressmen/women to try to get some momentum behind this bill! A 5% tax on satellite (in addition to the normal 6% sales/servie tax = 11%) is wrong and there is NO reason for it!

We pay that 5% GRT on every gallon of CT fuel too, plus another CT state fuel excise tax, plus a federal tax.
(Grumpy rant #695)
Remember the promise of the CT income tax being temporary?

Man! You're making my friggin' head spin!
I know it's not your fault but what's a guy to do that just wants his TV and doesn't want to become a satellite services expert?
Can I, in Fairfield County, get the Hartford/New Haven feed for CBS (channel 3) and NBC (channel 30, I think ... it's 6 on the cable) and can I get Connecticut Public TV (which is 16 on Comcast)?
If not then satellite isn't an option for me. I don't care crap about HDTV or east/west or anything else?
And, if I ask this same question of the satellite guys am I going to get an honest answer?

 | reply to latichever said by latichever: Question for satellite tv people. Is it possible yet to get both CT and NY local channels? For example, could I get both channel 13 and CPTV (PBS), New York and CT network stations, plus channel 61 Hartford and channel 11 NY?
I know that I'm late to the thread on this, but since I learned a few things in the process of getting DirecTV installed last week.
For exactly what you're asking: unless/until laws are changed, no.
The best you could do is get Hartford locals (3, 8, 20, 24, 30, 59, 61) + NY major networks (2, 4, 5, 7) if you got waivers + (on DISH only) NY superstations (9, 11).
However...you might also want to look into the magic of "moving" over on dbsforums.com or tivocommunity.com. If you "moved" to New York, you could get all NY locals, and then retain Hartford area stations via antenna or basic cable.
And, it's worth noting, at least on DirecTV, the picture quality of the NY locals is much better than the Hartford locals. |

Why must we become our own "experts"???
I think it's great that we have this forum where we can all support each other but why can't we get the answers from the vendors?

1 edit | reply to ctgreybeard No yet yes: Initially you will only be able to get NYC channels as local. Then, you will be able to apply for waivers (of which I am in the process and I am being helped myself) when I get the CT channel(s) I'll let you know what I did and what I got. If you call DirecTV or Dish Network and ask if you can get CT stations in your zip code, then they'll say no, but if you say local stations, they'll say yes-- local meaning New York.
I'll try to help and let everyone know my results. "We're all in this together kid" --Robert DeNiro in 'Brazil' (1985) |

sirchiefPremium join:2001-12-14 Cromwell, CT | reply to Rungel I ordered the Dish from SBC yesterday. It's $27/month cheaper for me than Comcast digital and I will have digital in 2 rooms.
The $6.00/month discount for having DSL doesn't hurt either.
Also, I like the fact that SBC Dish offers two separate boxes for two rooms, rather than 1 box with a dual tuner, offered by DISH. |
|
 | reply to Rungel You can get as many boxes for as many rooms as you like from any company. There is no limit, you just have to pay an extra fee each month for each extra receiver you have. |
