anon : Many Thanks to anon5812 for your instructions. They worked great on my Hawking HWR54G Rev. M. I did have some problems with the Sercomm firmware. I would get disconnected frequently when using WPA2-PSK. However, WPA-PSK (AES) worked flawlessly for me.

For those who are interested, I have succeeded in loading the Linksys WRT54GC firmware (version 1.02.8) to my HWR54G. It is the only other compatible firmware that I could find that has WPA2 support. It also includes many other useful features not available on other releases.

The Linksys is basically the same hardware as the AR315W, HWR54G, Sercomm IP806SM, etc... It uses the same Marvell chips rearranged for the smaller case of the WRT54GC. In addition to anon5812's instructions, replace the value at 0x01 to "02" (hex) on the Linksys firmware. In changing this value, you are changing the PID Version (different from PID discussed by anon5812) from "00 01" to "00 02". This value should be the same on all our routers (AR315W, HWR54G, etc...). Then load the modified firmware after restoring defaults (highly recommended) to your router.

Keep in mind that after flashing, the new IP for the router will be 192.168.1.1. Typically, there is no username for the login and the password is "admin" (default on Linksys routers). Since I had restored defaults prior to flashing, I had to use "admin" for the username and "admin" for the password to login after flashing. Then I immediately restored defaults in the Linksys web interface. Thereafter, the default Linksys login applies.

I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I'm eager to. Good luck to all willing to try.

Re: Airlink+ AR315W - having some fun

anon : alright guys, here's how you use the IP806SM .IMG file from the everbestHK site - at least, here's how I loaded it to my AR315W.

First - the IMG file has an incorrect PID as reported by TFTP if I just try to write it to the router. I assume this is productID. by studying several IMG files, I believe that I have determined that the value at 0x26 (hex) in the IMG file is the PID.

A couple of examples:

The hawking firmware has the value "16" (hex) at 0x26.
The airlink "1011 to 1023" firmware has "01" (hex) at 0x26.
The airlink "1021 to 1023" firmware has "14" (hex) at 0x26.
The sercomm/everbestHK firmware has "01" (hex) at 0x26.

I am purely guessing that "01" is the reference board/OEM PID. Probably, the early airlink units were identical clone of the reference board and had 01 as the PID. then later airlink got their own PID (14). That's probably why they released two different IMG firmwares for the same router - the old ones would only recognize PID 01, and the new ones only recognize PID 14. Just a guess!!! Airlink+ also became airlink101 so maybe that had an effect too??

Anyways, I took the most recent IMG file from the sercomm/everbestHK site for the IP806SM, altered the "01" (hex) at 0x26 (hex) in the IMG file to "14" (hex). Saved that, and TFTP'd it. The router took the new firmware on the first try and rebooted just fine at 192.168.0.1. Apparently either the file has no CRC, or the header is not part of the CRC calculations. If you compare the 1011-1023 to the 1021-1023 firmware, the only change I noticed is this single byte.

Disclaimer: if you brick your router trying this, it's NOT my fault, and I don't know how to fix it. This isn't a WRT54G, there isn't much knowledge out there about it. The above information worked for me. in otherwords, don't try this if you can't afford to lose the router in case something goes wrong (power outage when you flash the firmware, aliens invade your router, whatever).

As for the new features/functionality, I can confirm that WPA2 is available. The overall menuing is similiar to the airlink firmware. (setup wizard, LAN ,wireless, password, status, advanced, administration are the opttions running down the left hand side). The region defaults to "europe" after you load this firmware so be sure to change it as necessary. You can apply MAC level access control to filter LAN and/or internet access independently - I don't rememver the stock firmware having this. Theres a few other things that look different too. But it's still a relatively basic firmware, it doesn't have any superadvanced fancy stuff that I saw. I can not comment on any stability or performance fixes as I'm using a WRT54G now - I just upgraded this firmware to play with it.

Finally, when mine reset, the password I had configured prior to the flash, was still in effect. I would suggest to go to "administration" and then to "config file" and then "restore defaults" after flashing, to make sure the router is clean slate for any new code changes, then let it reboot and reconfigure it after that. This is something the WRT54G groups have taught - whenever changing firmwares, erase the settings in case the different firmwares use them differently. Maybe even do the factory defaults before flashing it as well (i.e., set factory default, flash, then factory default again).

firmware reports itself as version 2.3 release 1A.

good luck!!

Goofymac : I bought the Airlink AR315W from Frys for 20 bucks and am very pleased. I am using an Airlink AWLH3025 wireless PCI card with the included drivers and utility. At this time.

First thing I would like to say is about the PCI card. I was using a SMC Barricade router model (SMC7004AWBR) with good results using both the windows drivers and the airlink Drivers and Utility. Since my PC with this card is located I extended the antenna to receive more signal with a couple of antenna extension cables. Was working fine with Drop offs in signal from time to time. The PCI card was very surprising It worked and still does like a champ. I promptly purchased another one at Frys on my next visit.

Now for the Airlink AR315W. WOW is all I can say This little puppy worked like a champ. No range issues. Pulgged in my regular antenna to the back of my PC and still received strong signal with my Windows drivers and util. Yes I did notice the drop off in internet connections with the router that most are mentioning. A simple power cycle of the router solved the issues as well as accessing the router web interface and clicking restart. Now I have just installed the Airlink PCI card drivers and utility and have had no issues with the connection or the router dropping the internet connection. Interesting I have thought but it has been mentioned in this forum before. But for 30 Bucks I don't think you can go wrong with the PCI card and the router. This thing has so many features it is crazy.

Yes this thing gets HOT but doesn't seem to affect the performance of the unit. I will try the heatsink fix that was mentioned before. But I get much better range, Speed and signal strength. Only thing this router is missing is the built in print server I am so used to. Maybe Ill get one on sale next time I go to Frys.

Happy computing and networking.

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth.

GoofyMac

AMD + ATI = One kick ass system

anon : johnnyrotten,

Thanks for the research and excellent upgrade instructions!
The Hawkings firmware does appear to solve the DNS problems I was seeing with the Airlink+ 1.0.21 firmware (originally shipped with the 1.0.23 version - I downgraded to 1.0.21 to fix WLAN problems). The actual DNS IP addresses are now pushed to the DHCP clients. Interestingly I was able to preserve all of my previous settings across the upgrade (expect for the admin password) - an indication of the high degree of H/W similarity (identical)used in the two routers. It is just amazing that Airlink can't ship/release a working version of F/W with so many obvious problems - WLAN resetting, DNS, DHCP, save/restore settings, ...

Hawking HWR54G (REV. M ONLY) for Ar315w

johnnyrotten9 : Just loaded firmware from Hawking Technology to my AR315w. Hawking's firmware seems to work the best for me, although I have only been using it for about a week. The DNS and DHCP problems seems to be fixed. And I have not had alot of dissconnects like Airlink firmware. I was using the Xterasys' firmware but lost WPA security. I was happy to find out that Hawking's Firmware has WPA security. In addition to the various fixes the web menus are much nicer too. If anyone else would like to try this firmware, you can download from Hawking Technology's website. Hawking's HWR54G (REV. M ONLY) uses the same arm914 chipest. Do not use the other revision firmware because I have not tested nor do I know if even uses the arm914 chipset. Again ONLY USE THE HWR54G (REV. M) FIRMWARE!! The link for the firmware can be found at this page- »www.hawkingtech.com/drivers.php?CatId=19
The zip file will have 2 files a .bin file and a .img file. I used the .bin file because I think to use the .img file the header must be altered for it to be loaded over the Airlinks firmware. Next u will need a program to load the bin file onto the Airlink router. I used the upgrade utility supplied with Xterasys' 1.1 r15 firmware. That can be found on this page »www.xterasys.com/drivers.htm. Make sure it is the Xterasys XR-2407G firmware. The next thing you will need to do is access your Airlink router by typing 192.168.1.1 (deault) into your browser and change your password to be blank - (not the word blank!! but leave it blank, because the Xterasys ugrade utility doesn't give u the option to put in your password). I think u must also make sure the "Enable Firmware Upgrade using TFTP" is checked in the options section (atleast I did). So then just open the upgrade utility in the Xterasy's firmware folder and load the .bin from Hawking's firmware folder. *You may have to open the RmDrv.exe (which is in the same folder as the upgrade.exe file to get it to find your router on the network). Once u load the firmware and upgrade it should say "upgrade successfull." You must then hard reset the router by holding the reset button on the back of the router for 45 secs. Then unplug and plug back in the power and see if the upgrade worked. The router ip will now be 192.168.254 and your user name will be admin and password will be blank (not the word blank). If it all works you should see a nicer looking Hawking web screen, with WPA security back and the DNS and DHCP problems fixed. Let me know what you all think of this firmware. It has worked the best for me, over all other firmware. Let me know what you all think about this firmware, and don't blame me if things go wrong and you end up with paper weight. This process worked for me, so it should work for you all if you follow the instructions. Good luck!!!!

I'd rather prefer a really small loss in speed than to have my surfing being broken up everytime, and unplugging and repluggin the router every 15 minutes. The GUI is a bit 'less' in this release as compared to the one in release 24, especially the MAC exclusion settings is a bit confusing. But overall, its a stable release of Airlinks firmware, and much better than releases 11, 23, and 24.

Well, its been 11 hours since i flashed it, and lets hope it continues to run fine. The WPA-PSK authentication doesnt seem to be causing much of a problem, but for some reason, my Intel PROSET wireless software cannot connet me to my AP, but the microsoft client can.
mtnmedic5 : Hey Guys,

I've been reading this forum thread for a little while since I first got interested in this router. Originally, I became interested in it when Fry's had it on sale for slightly less than $30. That was a while ago. I went to Fry's for their day-after-Thanksgiving sale to shop around. I went kind of late so I missed out on all the good deals but I wanted to see if I could get lucky and find one of these routers left. There weren't any on the shelves. So I just did some window shopping. Not too much later, while in a different department, I came across this router, which was left by someone (who probably didn't want to walk all the way back to the networking section). The sticker price was $79.99 but I confirmed the sale price by comparing the SKU number against the sale announcement. Sale price: $17.99. Couldn't pass THAT up.

So, I've been using it at home on a "trial" basis (my normal router is a Microsoft MN-500, 802.11b) to see what this little thing can do. It's being used as part of an infrastructure network with WEP, one wired PC (main desktop) and two wi-fi (laptop and second desktop).

Setup was pretty easy. It was nice not to have to install any software for a change, as the router's internal software seems to do quite nicely, which comes with some neat little administrative utilities.

I didn't have any significant problems in getting the network set back up with this router. I have a small 1 bedroom house and this router sits on the very top of my living room's entertainment center, for the time being.

One thing's for sure...this little sucker does get warm, but it's in a well-ventilated area and doesn't seem to be a fire threat. I mean, it's not hot, by any means. "Hot" to me is it'll hurt even in the slightest bit if I touch it with my fingertips.

Now, for performance. Obviously, some channels are weaker than others. 6mbps seems to be the absolute slowest. 54mbps is attainable a good portion of the time, with the "average low" speed of 36mbps. Even at THAT rate, it's still better than the maximum of 11mbps my old router provided. So, for $18, it's not a bad upgrade.

By the way, I've not had any DNS issues.

Seems to be a nice little router. Almost looks like a toy, though. I did go straight to the Airlinkplus.com web site and downloaded then installed the firmware update (which is in Beta, still). So far, so good.

Maybe I just got lucky?:)

This seems very similar to Linksys picture except they show a single SDRAM chip. I did not find 88w510 datasheet to see supported SDRAM configurations and coulod not tell the exact eTron part on the linksys picture. (there are no 32Mb chips, 16, 64, 128, 256 ... i suspect the eTron part on linksys board is either 16 or 64Mb). It maybe that 88W510 can use 32Mb only and it was cheaper to buy single 64Mb chip (if not memory size missmatch can cause problems if F/W does not autosize memory). Well i'll be honest im actually surprise that this product actually works not only do i get the speed which is a big improvement so far i haven't had a connection drop and i figure i give it a big time rundown & benchmark test with SiSoft Sandra, other warez and downloading test to determine overall performance.
anon : I purchased this AirLink+ AR315W from Fry's for $25 on sale. Custom configuration was quick. Set up as G only using WPA-PSK. It works, however, there are a few flaws that should have been addressed by the manufacturer before ever shipping this product.

1. You can permit wireless users to access either the internet, lan or both. Essentially this should allow you to give wireless users internet only in order to protect the local network. However, if you block out the lan, you stop the wireless users from acquiring a DHCP address. This is because the router only issues DHCP addresses to the LAN. Surely they could allow a traffic to pass through to clients that have properly authenticated through WPA.

2. BIG BAD DNS problems! This router has intermittant problems with DNS. I experienced them every 5 minutes or so. Try performing an NSLOOKUP and you'll hose up the router for good and only a restart of the router will fix it.

3. Disable UPnP and the WAN connection dies. How nice, is this a new feature?

When this router is operating, it is very quick. However, you will need to statically enter your DNS settings in your PC to overcome the DNS problem. In my environment, I would like to allow wireless users internet traffic but keep them off of the lan without requiring statically entered IP information. Also, there are no updates available to fix the problem.

My recommendation is not to waste your time purchasing this router. Airlink isn't a manufacturer anyway, they just import Tawanese product, relable it and wrap it up real pretty.

Every once in a while you can get lucky and get something that works well. But back to Fry's this goes...

claudeo : That one I bought a while ago is still running fine (and still hot). I left it at a friend's house. I had installed it there so I could use his cable connection with a couple of laptops while visiting. It does seem to have a DNS problem every hour or so, which then resolves itself in couple of minute; this might be influenced by the ISP's DHCP lease time. Very odd bug. What's even more strange though is that I only saw it on the wireless connections, not the wired ones, and it only seems to affect new lookups. A workaround that seems to work is to hard wire the addresses of DNS servers on the web in the PC's IP configuration, so as not to depend on the router's DNS. Still no firmware update as of today. To be honest, I did not even bother to contact tech support. BTW, Fry's had it on sale for $24.95 last week-end. As I said, cheap entertainment as long as you don't take it too seriously.

JakCrow : I believe the router is Broadcom based and uses an embedded version of Linux. When I tested it out several months ago, every now and then when I did a config change and reboot, I would see various unix-y type messages leak out from behind the web interface. I eventually returned it and the Airlink+ 11g card I got because driver and firmware support was really lacking and the performance wasn't that great.

claudeo : Update:
2 days later and it still works just fine (with one nit, see below). Installed it sideways with the hottest end up, to promote better airflow through the small grilles at each end of the case. I did take a look inside. Looks like the future--very few components. The major heat sources appear to be the RF circuitry, which is under a very low square metal shield, about 1 inch x 1 inch, and the brute force voltage regulator; looks like it brings down the 12V feed to operating voltage by dissipating as heat. Not a single heat sink in there. I have it installed as DHCP client (its WAN side is LAN side of my home network), and it gets a 1 day lease from my old BEFSR41 v1. It looks like when the lease is up it has trouble with the WAN connection for 5-10 minutes, and then it fixes itself and all is fine again (a manual power cycle fixes it well under a minute). My Proxim 54G card says it sees 54Mbps "rate" both ways. I'm not really equipped for a valid throughput test, so I don't really know. They tried to hit all kinds of markets. It has presets for games, VoIP forwarding, and even 2 DMZ computers if you have 2 WAN IP addresses. Now if only it had QOS...

claudeo : This new model of the cheapo brand wireless 802.11g gateway/router is on sale until tomorrow at Fry's for $29.99 (and no rebate). Looks like nobody ever reviews that brand's products, so I've been ildly wondering...

For a lark, I thought I'd try one. At that price, I figured if it doesn't work I can still crack it open for some cheap entertainment. Actually, it does seem to work pretty well, and it has some pretty nice admin and firewall features. Using it with an Orinoco Gold .b and WEP128 (obviously my .b card won't do WAP). The single antenna is detachable. It does get mighty hot though. Really hot. Makes me wonder how long it can last. It briefly drops the connection to my .b card every couple minutes or so, I guess to listen for .g cards (you can set it up to do .g only, .b only, or both). And, trying to save the config to a file, it seemed to lock up. Maybe I did not wait long enough. I have not tried it with my Orinoco .g card yet. Anyway, this is not really a review, just a little note for the easily amused.
