Well, it will probably get bumped back on top a lot as folks find new stuff to add to it...and I'll bet that the diligent mods of this great forum will add it to the FAQ. *grin*

 | reply to climbers Here is some free stuff that I use .
XP-Antispy - xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in WindowsXP.
MP3 Gain - MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume.
Hex - This applet converts Text to ASCII, Large Decimal, Hexadecimal, and Binary in a single click or keystroke! Or vice versa .
Faber Toys - Faber Toys is a system utility, mainly developed for power users who want to know what's going on in their Personal Computer. It may also be used by programmers as a tool for tracking their applications.
CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) - CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimisation tool. That removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing it to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast!
Eraser - Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.
Index.dat Suite - Index.dat Suite is a rather unique program that allows you not only to delete the index.dat files, temporary internet files, temp files, cookies and history, but it also allows you to view the index.dat files on your system.
Windows XP Prefetch Clean And Control 1.2.0 - Tool for flushing the Prefetch log and controlling the Prefetch Parameters.
OpenPorts - DiamondCS OpenPorts is a CLI (command line interface) console tool that allows you to see all open TCP and UDP ports on your system, including the owner process.
CmdLine - CmdLine is a unique process listing tool for Windows NT4/2K/XP that uses an undocumented technique to reveal the full commandlines (with all parameters!).
DelLater - DelLater is a tiny program that allows you to specify files to be deleted when Windows next boots, making it ideal for those situations when you can't delete a file because it's in use.
Autostart Viewer - Autostart Viewer allows you to see, modify, and control every autostarting program on your system, making it a powerful anti-trojan utility.
Advanced Process Manipulation - APM is an advanced process/module viewer and manipulation utility that allows unique control over target processes by becoming a part of them.
RegistryProt - RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows security and intrusion detection.
Regards, Jade.

I didn't see what age-group these kids fall into, but some of the high schoolers doing calc would fall in love with it. I believe Octave also has a cygwin-free version for windows now, which is a very nice matlab equivalent.

What are your picks for freeware replacements?
Explain to them that all the M$ operating systems are fatally flawed, and then leave them a nice Linux distribution. All the current distros include a huge quantity of high quality free software, and can be duplicated and distributed at will under the GPL.
If you can demonstrate Linux and persuade them to try something better, you'll make a lot of converts on the basis of cost alone!
