My guess is there won't be any. There are a couple of reasons I say this. Most of the major carriers are reducing the consumer business because they no longer get a discount on leasing copper. Not sure about where you live but I haven't seen a MCI or AT&T commercial for a while now. There is no profit in using copper for anyone except the RBOC (regional bell operating company) who owns it. You can thank that judge in DC and the Bush administration for that.
Next, they are putting all their investment dollars in voice over ip (VOIP). They already have contracts with some of the major cable companies (Time warner is one) where they will bring you phone service over the cable via VOIP. If they can pull this off, they will further reduce the value of the RBOC copper and have a much cheaper, better and flexible access into your home. For this to work, they need you to switch from DSL to cable internet so bells copper will be unused thereby causing them to rethink their leasing pricing structure. If they bump you up to 8/1 you will never leave DSL and their VOIP investment will fail to take off.
Notice the only ones offering higher DSL speeds are the RBOC's (SBC, Verizon) and people reselling the RBOC's service.
The good news is pressure is being put on the White House and Congress because America has fallen behind in the broadband arena. I have 1.5/768 so I'm going to wait and see what happens next. It's presently a stalemate. All sides have dug in and it is the consumer that is paying the price and the only solution appears to be legislative. I'm just surprised this topic hasn't come up in any of the presidential debates. |
