 | [MCI] Switch to MCI from cable modem? Hey, folks, looking for some feedback.
I have a cable modem from Bright House Networks (Farmington, Michigan) which works fine, but costs $45/month. I've had The Neighborhood from MCI for some time, but not their DSL service. Did a little checking here, and discovered I can get MCI DSL for $20/month.
What's been your experience? I'd love to save $25/month, but as it's needed for work-related stuff for both my wife and me, it's got to be somewhat reliable. Thanks. |

 | I appreciate that.
They're charging a $99.00 activiation fee. Were you able to get that waived, or did you end up having to pay it? |

If it has gone down, I don't know about it. The speed is less than stellar, certainly nothing like cable. But, for 20 bucks you just can't go wrong. |

 | reply to dhmartyn I had optimum online, but because i'm always running bittorrent, they capped me. so i decided to switch back to earthlink DSL which is what i had before, but the deal didn't go through, earthlink said the order was rejected... supposedly MCI wouldn't allow it. so I ordered DSL from MCI. and right now it does 320/200... It sucks, I'm calling customer service. |

How long have you had the service? How far away are you from the CO? |
|
 | CO distance i had the service since 2 days ago, Oct 21. I'm 11,020 from my CO. |

You could wait a few days to make sure you're stable at the speeds you have then call them and beg for a little som'um som'um. It all depends on who you get as to what they'll do for ya. |
|
 | well my CO hasnt changed since the time i had Earthlink DSL, and with Earthlink DSL, I had 1200/256 speeds. also i find it odd that others with MCI get the same 300/200 speeds. either way i shall call MCI until someone there boosts my signal or gets me to at least 1000/200 speeds.
another idea i had was to replace the phone lines on my house, i have this MonsterCable brand telephone cord, which is 25ft long, which is more than enough to reach from the aluminum box outside my house to my modem in my room, I remember when I first had Earthlink, some tech from Covad, ran my DSL line from the aluminum box outside directly to my modem with the MonsterCable I gave him. I remember I needed no filters in any one of my phones when he did that. perhaps that might boost the signal a little bit more. |

The device you are talking about is called a NID and the configuration is called a homerun. Search this forum and you will find all the answers you need. Basically, the filter is being put on outside so you don't need them inside. |

 | hmmm, home run is done using CAT5 cable from NID to DSL modem, the length was 21ft. there is another home run to the first phone and then a splice from that phone to the second phone. i have filters installed in both phones. still i get 300/200. and i'm currently on the phone with MCI, waiting.... |
