Re: BT slowdowns?

said by geiss8:

I think only shaw has the problem, none of other forums has similar complaint.
There is a news item that talks about P2P issues in the InsightBB and Mediacom forums. Here's a stickied thread in Mediacom, and here's one in InsightBB. Maybe there's something helpful in there? I noticed that in the InsightBB thread I linked to one anon user talks about software ISPs can run to limit P2P traffic, here's a direct link... don't know if that user's blowing smoke or not though.

i have rr (not shaw) and have noticed 10 simultaneous torrents get me 40-80Kbps in the last 2 days, while normally i get 180-200Kbps. upload seems to be the same, although a little slower in getting to max speed

Yeah, I live in Vancouver, Shaw Extreme I, XP+SP1, and over the last week or so my BT downloads are non existent to dead all the time, definatly something Shaw did. They were doing huge upgrades to their DOCSIS 2 stuff and still are, obviously having adverse effects.

Shaw Extreme-I users in the greater Vancouver area.

Alright, I have an answer for all you waiting to download, I talked to Van.Support and Calgary. They know about the issue and have been reading the countless forums describing this issue. Van.Support is saying that Calgary has the issue in mind but are not talking about it or sharing any WIP reports with support staff. Apparantly no one is making enough of a big deal about this issue, so, while we suffer with slow speeds, make an effort and send a BT Protocol related email to van.help@sjrb.ca and complain!! They will pass the msg off to Calgary for you, we get enough people complain about it, we'll get something done. I'm also taking it upon myself to start up a customer DB complaint forum on my site, head to »shaze.ca and register yourself @ the forum posted to know what I know when I know it.

the multiples of 3.2 kbytes/sec is an Azureus thing. I don't see anything like that with Shad0w's experimental bit torrent.
I just downloaded Azureus to try it out, and sure enough, same 3.2 multiplier thing. Looks like Azureus us just lazy at math or something.
BTW, no speed problems here in Calgary on the Docsis side.

Good to know it's only Vancouver based, but I think we covered that somewhere, I wonder if it's directly effected by the changes made last month?

well i cant say i get bad connections with bit torrent, i get usually 80-120k
but i seem not to be able to connect to half the seeders, most of the time
like if 120 seeders, i can connect to about maybe 20

i noticed most of the people with slowdowns have xp with sp1 or sp2, and i got osx and havent noticed any slowdown ever

maybe im just lucky, or it could be a something to do with windows networking, just a thought

Hello

Thank you for contacting Shaw Internet technical support.

There have been reports of problems with BitTorrent from users of ISPs all
over the Internet, which indicates that the problem is not limited to a
single network. The current theory regarding the BitTorrent issue is that
the limitation has been imposed by Windows XP service pack 2, which
restricts network sharing to ten users per port. Since BitTorrent restricts
downloading based upon upload rates, and Windows XP with SP2 is so
widespread among BitTorrent users, this could certainly affect the speed of
the BitTorrent network as a whole. There has been no official confirmation,
of course, but it does seem a likely explanation. We are investigating, but
if the problem does turn out to be SP2, we cannot resolve the situation
because it is an operating system issue.

I hope that this helps, but should you have any further questions or
concerns, please let us know.

Thank you for choosing Shaw.

I really don't think it's because of the SP2 issue in WinXP. I've installed SP2 way before the BT slow downs. This is only recent. If it really is an SP2 issue then why are people with SP1 having the same problem?

The best thing is just for everyone who is having problems to call up Shaw and giving them your system specs and OS specs. I'm sure there's more to this than just an XP SP2 issue.

Hello

Thank you for contacting Shaw Internet technical support.

We have found that users on various Internet service providers all over the
Internet seem to be experiencing this problem, particularly with BitTorrent,
which indicates that it is not a problem with the users' connections. The
leading theory at the moment is that Windows XP's Service Pack 2 restricts
the number of downloads, which in the case of BitTorrent means that it also
restricts the number of seeds since downloaders are also uploaders, and so
the whole system starts to slow. We are investigating to see whether we can
find a solution, but at the moment it looks like an operating system issue
specific to SP2.

I hope that this helps, but should you have any further questions or
concerns, please let us know.

Thank you for choosing Shaw.

I also highly doubt that it has something to do with SP2, Ive had that installed since Sept and wasnt noticing any problems until last weekend.

Keep in mind that I also know lots of people who are on ADSL with SP2 and they seem to have no problems whatsoever.

Coinciding with this is TheSHAD0W's post on network providers that are throttling standard ports.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes, as will2k said, ADSL [Vancouver/TELUS] is fine.

And yes, my connection is fine.

Anyhow, he wrote a bit on throttling in general and it was dated on October 25th.....
Anyone know when the "BitTorrent problem" started to occur?

The thing with P2P is if it's an SP2 issue then other people who do have it will have the problems and they will become your problems when you try to connect to them.

Granted SP2 has been out a long time and this started happening to everyone on October 30th.
