This vote was only to approve public money to sponsor a feasibility study to get the true cost of the entire project. They were saying it was going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $60k. This study would then be passed along to the private sector. | |

The need for a feasibility was to prove out the idea of it being fully funded by the private sector. If it sounds dumb, just understand that when dealing with a public "utility" like muni-broadband, you need to jump through some extra hoops to make sure that the citizens aren't left footing a bill they didn't see coming. | |

North Aurora, IL | That's the whole point isn't it? Private sector knows users like you exist, and would pay out the ass for the right amount of bandwidth. I was reading one of the articles from the local Tri-City newspaper (the one with the negative ads running in it) and the Comcast spokeswoman was basically saying that if the fiber got voted in, then Comcast might look into upgrading the speed of the local network because the people would have spoken on wanting more speed. This vote was as much about telling SBC/Comcast that they don't want anymore speed to the home as it was about not wanting choices. I live within earshot of municipal Batavia....I was dying to put a vote in favor, but my city has not moved for something like this yet...if ever. | |
