PA govt. Inc. Dave...you got it right. I live in Center City and I too am sick of the potholes & the streets in the winter. And the stinkin' wage tax is the WORST. I already have broadband. Anybody who wants to get it can either pay for it for their home or go to their nearest internet cafe. I couldn't care less if Philly gave OC-3s to all its residents. (OK, maybe I'd care a little in that case. ) )
But how'd we get to the point where Verizon (or any corp.) can write our laws??? It doesn't matter if Philly would benefit or not from city-wide wireless, but I'll be d4mned if Verizon is going to tell me what's best for me or my city!!!
What's next, they'll say to our congressmen that cable internet access is a threat to our way of life? That Sprint and Cingular (but not VZ) cell-phone frequencies may cause cancer, so pass a law against them too? How about a 80% tax on VoIP while they're at it?
Yeah, I'm afraid of PA slipping into communism, but I'm worried more about our lawmaking being sold to the highest bidder. |

 | I guess Verizon gets a say in your legislature because they probably pay more in tax money to your state government than the city of Philly does, and they make more campaign contributions to the legislators than any citizen in the state.
Also, if the municipalities start providing cheap or free internet access then there would be no point for Verizon or Comcast to offer it, in which case that would be less revenue for the government in the form of taxes that they charge Verizon and Comcast which means the government would have to raise your taxes 1)Just to run the network, 2)To make up the difference of revenue lost from not collecting taxes from broadband companies. You people that whine don't seem to understand that nothing in life is free, where would the money to provide free Wi-fi come from? |

 | "You people." Heh. Ross Perot school of debate...
So according to your logic(if you could call it that), those who pay more in taxes get more say in government? So Bill Gates would get 100,000 votes while the poor sap who works at Starbucks gets one? And then Bill gets to write the laws too, since he saw fit to have more money that most other citizens? American Airlines and Clear Channel would get to pick our next congressmen?
If you had read my post, you'd see that I "couldn't care less" if Philly or Pittsburgh or Lancaster or Erie got as long as schools are in good shape, roads aren't fallling apart (*cough*South St. bridge*cough*), and there are enough cops, doctors & firemen to do their jobs. I pay taxes just like you. Yes, it'd be a bad idea for Philly to do wireless before taking care of their business. (Would you let your heat get cut off so you can pay your broadband bill?)
My point being was that...corporations...should...not...write...laws. Period. No matter how much they pay in taxes. The Constitution says we are a government "of the people," not "of the company." |
