cybrog6 : Thanks to you all for the replies. While the burn-in effect works well with text layers, it is also useful for other images as well. You can also rotate the image before applying the effect, for example, rotate counter clockwise 90 degrees and apply. After the new image appears, rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and the effect will move from top to bottom. I used this method when creating this image.

[attachment=1]

I tried it from left to right first and was not satisfied with the results. Rotating the layers first, improved the end results. I used the fractal explorer for the background (nebula), sphere designer for the planet and the burn-in effect for the meteor. I also used the flare effect for the impact. This required copying some layers, adding the flare effect and replacing them with the flare effect added.
:)
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

GIMP Burn-in Tutorial

cybrog6 : I have been asked about this effect several times and thought I would post how it was done with the GIMP.

Create a new background, for this example, I have used a typical banner size. The screenshot below shows the settings.
[attachment=1]

I used a color gradient on the background, see screenshots below for the settings I used and resulting image.
[attachment=2]
[attachment=3]

Select the text tool from the toolbox, select font, size and color. See settings I used below.
[attachment=4]

Notice the extra spaces before and after the line of text, this will prevent the corona from being cut off at the ends.
[attachment=5]

Move the text layer to the appropriate placement.
[attachment=6]

Click on Script-fu > Animators> Burn-in.
[attachment=7]

Make adjustments to suit your needs and click OK.
[attachment=8]

A new image will appear with many layers, at this point you may want to click on Filters> Animation> Playback to see how it looks. I have had to delete unwanted layers many times when using this method. On this image I had to delete the first eleven layers. You can pull up the layers dialog by clicking Dialogs> Layers. From the dialog box you can right click on the layers you want to remove and click delete. After you have this sorted out, click on Filters> Animation> Optimize (for GIF). A new optimized image will appear.
[attachment=9]
[attachment=10]

Click on File> Save as>, type in name of file and extension. You may also type in name and select extension from the drop down menu. You will then be presented with the export dialog, make sure Save as Animation is selected and click Export. You will then see the GIF Options dialog, make necessary settings and click OK.
[attachment=11]
[attachment=12]

And the results. :)
[attachment=13]

I think that just about covers it, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">
