It's pretty alarming to be port scanned, and have script kiddies launching attacks via spoofed or owned ip addresses.
I have a Norton firewall/antivirus up 2 date...xp up to date and I am running Firefox.

I am in the same boat as the thread originator. I have a rather slow 28.8 connection that is only connected a few hours a day. High speed should be available beginning of next year. I want to have everything as secure as possible before I put a computer on a 24/7 high speed connection.
