AirLink 108mbps router

Just got this from Fry's. Been up at least 2 hours, no reboots with dynamic turbo. What the hell is with D-Link?

Basically the AirLink router is like a clone of D-Link since they both uses the Atheros chipset.

Can you tell me what rated voltage is on your power supply?

Same as d-links. 5V. The power supply is the EXACT SAME aside from the sticker not saying d-link. They both have the same indent on the one side, and both have the transformer on the actual plug...

Either D-Link made a crap change to their board that broke it, or the firmware on the Airlink is superior.

Which leads to the question I asked before when this router was mentioned in this forum in some other threads: Anyone think it's possible to hack the firmware and let us run it on the DI-624? I believe Airlink's firmware also has more features, like SNMP, some advanced routing stuff, and most important to me, WPA with AES encryption.

Since all these routers (Airlink, D-Link, Netgear) use the same Atheros chipset, I suspect Airlink, with it's lack of marketing and technical ability, probably just takes the stock Atheros reference design (board, firmware, and all), and just sells it straight out, whereas D-Link and Netgear have to make it "user-friendly" with setup wizards, simplified features, etc, as well as needing to differentiate between brands. Notice how the D-Link and Netgear external enclosures even have to look unique, and have flashy GUI web-interfaces, while this Airlink one is very plain, yet apparently highly functional. I agree and think that D-Link and Netgear, in their attempt to add their own customizations to the reference design, probably screwed something up, while this Airlink router can be sold dirt cheap because there was no extra development effort needed for it, just a stock rebadge (as it were).

Hmmm... Where said that Airlink 108's firmware supports AES? Hmmm... Can someone verify?
I got excited about getting my DI-624 today and now looking at the AR410W.... .... Someone tell me what to do PLEASE!!!....

Oh... Outpost... Is the store price same as the in store price? Last time I checked is 80 buxs...

Has anyone tried flashing the AR410W firmware onto the DI-624? the firmware files are the same size.

I'm thinking about trying to flash it to the DI624. The files are the same format [BIN with MEM inside]. Someone did this with an older version of Eusso firmware which is the same type of thing. Yes, it has advanced routing features, no outpost is more expensive since store price is $25 on sale. The Airlink has a cool setup wizard btw :P

DI-624 checks the hardware ID before it allows you to flash. So it won't allow you to flash using that firmware.

Me Again... Open the BINs using an archiver (ARJ format) and open the MEM inside with a hex editor or Notepad... Ummm... Fun stuff inside!

Sorry for so many posts... Here's what I found under Notepad for the Airlink router. :P
It seems that both firmware contains AES information but it seems that D-Link is missing some kind of trigger to turn AES on... Maybe I am wrong because I am no programmer yet... Someone play with it with a HEX editor and zip it back as NML.ARJ and see what happens (Rename the ARJ to BIN after compressing.)

All of the files like images and HTML files are stored incline in the MEM file as you can see the word "GIF89a" when the files approaches to a GIF file. (Someone brave enough to change it to your own logo? )

There is a site somewhere about the code at the beginning for hardware ID's, the site had to deal with the DI-604. If I can find that I'll see what I can do.

Can any Airlink owners verify if the Airlink 108 has the same leds as DI-624? If the new firmware is flashed, would it break the leds? (Or maybe it is not controlled by the user-serviceable firmware.)

A couple of things (from memory) of when this was done for the 614+ and some other router's firmware:

1. There were a few bytes at the beginning of the file that needed to be modified. perhaps the approach here would be to download a firmware for the AirPlus and look at the first few bytes of that file.

2. In the case of the DI-614+, the ordering of the ports were different. LAN port #4 became the WAN port.

Ummm... There should also be a checksum in the firmware which is checked before the firmware is actually flashed. (CHKSUM check in firmware) I think this needs to be changed before any modified firmware could be flashed...

Be careful of your warranty.

The router is in almost the same box... there are the same amount of lights and all.

Oops... my bad. I looked over the Airlink manual again and it doesn't explicitly mention AES support. I think I was confusing it for another router (I know the new Netgear SuperA/G dual-band router has AES mentioned in the manual).

However, it does seem intriguing that the option for AES appears to exist in the firmware, just that it's not enabled. I hope those firmware-savvy people can figure out how to hack it. Solid firmware with AES support might just save the day for all of us DI-624 owners!

Are you able to find the text WPA-PSK (AES) in the router pages anywhere using the latest December firmware from Airlink? It seems I find the text using Notepad in their Dec firmware.

Ummm... Planning to ship my DI-624 back on Monday once shipping resumes. (Got a RA# from Outpost this morning since I can't straightly return it to the store. :p)
Fry's sells the router for 79.99 in stores and it seems that Outpost is now out of stock. (104 peoples are ordering this router... I'm surprised. There are 15 more routers in stock and most likely it will go to the people who order first... New stock would hopefully come by Jan 4 according to a rep from Outpost.)

Find info on the firmware structure and checksum algorithm here:
»hri.sourceforge.net/di_604/flash_mem.html

Hope this helps

The reason why it might be sold out is because Fry's and Outpost.com had this router on sale last week for $24.99 with NO rebates! The AP only version was also on sale at Outpost.com for $19.99 I believe. It might be another week or two before Fry's re-runs this recurring $25 deal. The regular price is indeed $79.99, but I don't think people would actual buy this at regular price?
