Re: Sympatico@MSN email problems I don't have any Norton products installed. Firewall nor Antivirus. Never knew Norton 2005 messes with it though, guess you learn something new every day. If it wasn't so bloated, I'd have it installed and possibly have that as my problem |

| Are you running any other Anti-Virus software that scans email on incoming and outgoing? If so, it's quite possible that the software you're using is also not capable of scanning with SSL.
Since many people have switched to the new platform and have no issues (including me), the problem is more likely on your end (most likely configuration).
What is the error message you get? Be sure to specify in your email client that your outgoing mail server requires authentication and provide it with your username/password information. |

 | Am I supposed to use SSL with 25 as the port? or the default (465)? Either way, neither seem to work. Also, I'm not using any antivirus programs whatsoever. The setup seemed to work for about a week, and suddenly crapped out and no longer works. |

| Outgoing (smtphm.sympatico.ca) SSL is still port 25, incoming (pophm.sympatico.ca) SSL should be port 995.
What email client are you using? What error message do you get? Have you told your email client that your outgoing mail server (for smtphm.sympatico.ca) requires authentication (and supplied username/password)? |

 | reply to cotam One thing to keep in mind and this might sound stupid ... Your access login password is not the same one you use for your email logins.
When you click on your shortcut to sympatico .. you will use a different password with your b1 ... and the MSN password will be the same as the one you will use with outlook too. This password is usually all caps. And you can always change it at the self-care site www.service.sympatico.ca and click on the log-in to check emails.
Norton is one of the biggest problems with the MSN errors. You need to lower your filters/settings to send emails. One other thing to keep in mind. Always enable to SSL conenction and the ports should be 25 and 995.
Also, if you're using gearbox, make sure to enter the proper imput in there because it won't stick once you reboot your system. Best is to remove Gearbox (for dial-up) users and create a connection manually. |

It already sounds like Microsoft has gotten them to switch their servers to a Windows platform. Microsoft specialist highly recommend companies use SSL for just about everything, or RPC over HTTPS.

Also, SSL is not a Microsoft-specific technology -- the UNIX mail-server at my university also uses them (although they probably don't want to spend money and get a 'proper' certificate, so I have to bother with clicking 'yes, I agree to accept the self-signed certificate' every time I open Outlook) |

If your University has their SSL setup correctly every time you use your same machine to login and get your email via Outlook you shouldn't be prompted for the certificate.
