cchhat01Dr. Zoidberg join:2001-05-01 Elmhurst, NY | [MCI] Waiting... waiting... still waiting Well I've been waiting for over a year to have MCI offer DSL service in my area being that its so much f**king cheaper than what I pay for cable. I could care less about the speed if it helps me save some $. I'm in NYC (Elmhurst, Queens) and I've had MCI since June 2003. phone number starts with 718-271-xxxx and I can't seem to be able to get DSL from any provider and the only one which can POSSIBLY offer service doesn't have service available. This is intolerable knowing that a COVAD CO is 3172 feet away (wire distance) from me. so that's probably like a few blocks away at most and still i cant f**king get any DSL service.
I called up MCI and the lady (quite kind and willing to help) said that the lines we have are owned by New Edge and MCI doesn't have a contract with them to offer any DSL service as of yet? 1 year and they couldn't reach a deal to get DSL rolling to their customers. The only reason why I'm with them is that my phone bill is amazingly lower and if I can get DSL, it would consolidate to even lower bill because it would mean I cancel my cable service which costs nearly $45.
Anyone know what is the deal with MCI? Any help will be appreciated.

| | cchat01, have you checked MCI website and wrote number in the availabity page to see what's available? Remember you can only get DSL thru MCI alone if you have phone service with them. MCI uses it's owned lines and equipment to provide DSL and trust me it's worth having DSL thru them, I have 1.5/768 DSL for 19.99 a month and that the cheapest DSL offer so far. You should call them back and ask them you want to have DSL thru them and see what happens from there...Cheers | | cchhat01Dr. Zoidberg join:2001-05-01 Elmhurst, NY | said by mciuser:

That's where i've been checking all throughout this time. Everytime I call them I asked them for THEIR dsl service not someone else. I have ONLY used their own website to check availability. And 19.99 a month for DSL is THE reason why I want to get service from them (Who wouldn't for such a good price)? What I don't understand is why can't I get DSL through them?
You seem to have DSL from them right? where are you residing and what kind of calling plan are you on with your phone line? I've been with them for 1.5 years now and they haven't done JACK in terms of DSL.
Please let me know your response.

I've been with them for 1.5 years now and they haven't done JACK in terms of DSL. Doesn't matter where he is, the problem is where you are. You have two problems which say you may never get DSL where you are. First, you said, "lines are owned by New Edge". Your lines are not owned by the RBOC so the old FCC rules didn't apply. They can't force New Edge to give them equipment space in their CO like they could an RBOC. They are leasing your lines from New Edge which is why they are providing you long distance however (the second problem), the CO for New Edge obviously is not big enough (does not serve enough consumers) to make it worth the investment of putting in a DSLAM etc... It is also not close enough to another CO with a DSLAM so you don't have DSL service.
Lastly, because that judge in DC over turned the FCC's rules regarding discount line leases, MCI and other companies stop investing in DSL. They don't want to pay the RBOC's fees for leasing the copper to your home. MCI is currently working with cable companies to provide Internet/VOIP as part of your cable package. That is their new angel for consumer markets.

I have 1.5/768 DSL for 19.99 a month So do I. I heard a rumor that those old lease deals the FCC allowed will soon expire and the cost for MCI to lease our lines from the RBOC's will go up. When that happens, the FAT lady will have officially sang... | |
