Safe to install Java 2 on Firefox 1.0?

I needed to install the Java 2 plug-in for one of my family members. They are using Firefox 1.0. It was needed for online chat. Is this safe to install?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by safe to install. If you are meaning is there any spyware in it, no. Nor should there be any viruses. Do they already have java installed on the computer? If so you may be able to just activate the mozilla plugin on the control panel aleviating the need to install this one.

I don't think there was any previous Java installed. Firefox just said that a plug-in was needed for the site.

Thanks
