I usually keep my PC running though the night (I turn my monitor and speakers off instead to save on electricity costs). The big thing is not to turn your *cable modem* off.
Unless you have a router, nope. Even rebooting will result in failure to get an IP lease from the DHCP server. That's why they say not to reboot in the letter.
