We are based in Puerto Banus and have a business that is 85% internet dependent for international communications.

We recently moved from Arrakis ( poor service ) to Telefonica (even worse) We contracted a second line, but cancelled Arrakis a week after the Telefonica service started to work. Telefonica had messed up on the paperwork and have now cut the new line and service. We are now left with no internet and approximately 20 days to reconnect. Telefonica are of course neither helpful nor apologetic.

As a final solution we are now going to contract traditional ADSL (we will stay with Telefonica as they hold the whip hand) but as a back up are also going to contract one of the wireless internet solutions, probably from Alo, The alo service in this area is provided via Fonetica (www.fonetica.com)

This may or may not work but I think if you are dependent upon an internet connection it is better not to put all your eggs in one basket.

I'm just 5 mins outside Marbella and the best I can get is a 300k line speed with BT Arrakis.

I initially ordered ADSL back in July (off Gonuts4free) and it was a right fiasco getting it sorted out even though I already had a phone line installed and working. After Telefonica installed the splitter I had to wait another 5 weeks for an engineer to come and configure/install router. It was a complete joke!

At the time of ordering they said they line would be upgraded to 1mb in September and as of today I'm still waiting and they don't know when it will be done and like I say above the best line speed I can get is just a poxy 300k.

I checked my phone number and it seems that I also can have Jazztel 20Mb ADSL 2+ and telephone line from November. Too good to be true? Perhaps, as your distance to the exchange determines your maximum speed. I don't think I could get more than 2Mb here. They mention portability on the web page, meaning you keep your old telephone number. For 35 Euros they provide a Wi-Fi router, which is very cheap. To buy one is much more expensive.

From November to April I shall be in Malaysia, where basic ADSl cost about a third it does here.

We were promised free installation and free Spanish phone call too, but after my first bill was 240E I knew they were not 'playing fair'. This is why I would like to leave Telefonica for a better company. I got a telemarketing call from WANADOO today and they have 4MB ADSL for 25E/month and (i think) free calls to Spain landline numbers.
This sounds like a good deal.

Does your router not show current attainable rate? The signal to noise ratio is the big problem here as the lines are often very old. Attenuation gets greater as distance from exchange increases and 4-5 km could be the limit.

These are my figures right now, not a good line!
Current Attainable Rate: upstream 820512, downstream 2438095
Current SNR Margin: upstream 16.5, downstream 25.0
Current Attenuation: upstream 58.5, downstream 31.5

I don't know how the signup process works with ya.com. I have only Telefónica + resellers coverage where I am.

It would be good to know why you have not been duplicated yet. I have read that they are taking longer than planned in some areas. Perhaps your line quality is not good enough. If you are using an ADSL router you can usually check this out.

It looks like you have coverage with ya.com. For my number they want 105 Euros a month for 4Mb!

Changing ADSL providers has always been a real problem in Spain, but recent legislation has theoretically made it less painful. Your new provider cannot give service till the old one releases the line and they are usually reluctant to do this.

I saw your post on YA.com and I followed along for the 4 Mbps line. Can I assume that after I enter my number and it proceeds to the next page (to choose additional hardware) that I can indeed get their 4 Mbps service? Will I get the same price they quote even if they resell telefonica?
The next question (should all these be affirmative- thereby clearing the way for a move to YA.com), is how I can switch services ALMOST seamlessly (i.e. experience as little downtime as possible during the switch)? Should I order YA.com first and then wait a week before switching off telefonica?

On ya.com web page the left hand menu under 'Acceso a Internet' has links to ADSL + llamadas and ADSL. (ADSL + llamadas includes local and national calls within Spain, but not mobile). Either of these takes you to the list of products available. On each product page at the top you have a button marked 'Date de Alta' (sign up). This gets you the page where you input your telephone number. The best deals only apply if your telephone exchange has direct access (unbundled local loop). If not they just resell Telefónica ADSL. The minimum bandwidth from Telefónica is currently in the process of duplication to 1Mb for the same price.
In Spain you get unlimited use - no caps yet.

Ya.com do not tie you to annual contracts. However I see great problems in having intermittent ADSL connection. It takes time to switch this on and off as the owner of the lines, Telefónica does not cooperate fully with the competition.

If you already know your telephone number you could look at the various providers' web pages and see what they can offer on your number.

If you are only 1-2 months a year in Spain could you not share a connection with a neighbour using a wireless or wired LAN? I work work as a consultant for a VOIP company here on the Costa Blanca, Spain. The way we do it is by using mast based wi-fi for last mile access clients. It works extremely well as the latency is kept to a minimum. Also our VOIP packets terminate in Madrid to keep the hops down. This is equals a first class solution for those without a landline. We have residential ans business customers and our mesh network is expandind all the time. Another bonus is external Spanish geographic numbers incoming and calls made to Spain, UK and Germany are treated as local calls!!
It's a good system and all the homework has been done. Soon we will imeplementing GSM channel banking.

The DSL voip system doesn't work, even Golden Eagle will admit that but only to his friends.

Their customer service sucks, they don't answer the phone, they lie about how good and how fast the system is.

We have a DSL Spain connection and we have been lied to, we are selling our house because what they promised us just didn't work and we need a working phone for our business. We're getting our money back.

We were sold the service as "unlimited" but you get monthly download AND upload limits, something they don't like telling you.

I have jazztell, the ISP been all the way in madrid and me in barcelona makes sense why my 1MB adsl speeds end up going under 1MB.
I do speed tests from time to time and it also varries sometimes between 800kb and 300 kb!.

I hear jazztell will have 4MB soon, i got a letter from them recently stating that and also read the Toro mention ing it here, but read what people say who have it!

In the end, I plumped for the provider with the best English :D , Telefonica was lousy, never replied to e-mails, when they did, it was in very broken English.

So I went for Spantel.......will run over my existing Telefonica line, the package (33 Eu / month) includes a wireless modem/hub router etc.

Perfect English, and all sorted in less that a week!!

Although I am used to Netgear, this looks a really interesting box called Inventel Home Gateway. Details at »www.inventel.com/en/product/data···_Gateway

The interesting bit are the support for IP phone (built-in) and Bluetooth (not sure what you would use this for, but it seemed like a good idea at the time :-) ) It also has a slot for a PC card.....etc etc.

I will be going to Spain on 11 March, where I am expecting to find a package with a user-id and password, to just plug and go !!

I will post a report when I am up and running to let folks know what I think.

Telefonica is the only one ISP is available in 90% of SPain so if u dont have more choices sorry for you. In SPanish boradband forums many people are sying telefonica is gonna upgrade to 1Mb/300kbps for the same prace on March 7th if it's true or false we will see it that day.

There was an interview with the boss of Jazztel and there says Jazztel will upgrade from its 1Mb/300 DSL ULL ( it's net must be available in your area) to 4M/512kbps and they will offer 16Mb/1Mb of DSL2+ and yes u will need a special modem DSL for it.

The others SPanish ISPS offers 2 differents speeds with differents prices depending what network they are using. for example tiscali SPain has two DSL 1Mb if the ALBura net is available in your place u can get 1Mb for 36€/moth

one other thing- you should look at getting Vonage service which works fantastic over your high speed internet. Vonage now offers a UK service- so it's great if you have to be phoning to UK lots- it acts as a local phone number in the UK. www.vonage.co.uk

I currently live in Los Arqueros Urb. just up the ronda road and have had telefonica basic service (512/128) for the past year. It was difficult to get telefonica up there to begin with, but once it was up and running i haven't had any complaints except for real speeds of 430/100. I use a netgear wireless G router with a SPI firewall- as I get plenty of DOS attacks, you will have no problem setting up that router for use in spain. The options are pretty good nowadays and you can pick up a router/package for tiscali,terra,wanadoo,telefonica, etc at an opencor (close to where you are) or the El Corte Ingles. Mr. Toro seems high on Jazztel ( www.jazztel.es ) they have english too. I have heard others comment that they like jazztel and real speeds are better. Don't worry- plenty of good options overall for you.

I have an apartment in Spain (Nueva Andalusia) , near Marbella, and I am planning to work part time in Spain and for this I need Broadband.

I am currently using BT Broadband in the UK with a Netgear ADSL/Wireless/Router etc. I am Extremely happy with this survive and need to see the options available in Spain. If I can't get the same level of service, I can't split my work location.

Basic requirements are 512kbps, unlimited usage, and I currently have a Telefonica line installed. BT provide a line upgrade only option (they just provide a DSL splitter), and you provide the Modem/Router etc.

First off I need to know what part of Spain u will move, that's is important cos u could get better offers than Telefonica has.
Actual offers in SPain

Telefonica:
512/128kbps for 39€+TAX + landline rent 1Mb/300kbps for 75€+tax 2Mb/300kbps for 120€ and 4Mb/512 for 150€+tax the good thing is it's available in everytwhere in SPain and they have English support, the bad things it uses proxies, Speed sucks

Jazztel (it's the one I'm using right now)

1Mb/300 kbps for 39€+TAX + telefonica land line

Pro, Good speed, it's works kinda good, no proxies,
Bad: It's not available in Everywhere, if it is not available in your zone they use the Telefonica's netowork so u would have the same offer than Telefonica

From what I can make out from the Telefonica site, it is 21.90/month, is this correct? Is that for a 512Kbps line and are there any startup charges? and if so what do you get, USB modem / router?
