 | DSL network speed erratic.......unreliable. Can someone explain to me why my DSL connection (web surfing in general) has been plagued with inconsistent, erratic and frankly unreliable behavior over the past few months. My situation is as follows:
1) I am 10,000 feet from an RT in Norwich, CT. 2) My line tests are all excellent. I did every one in the testing series in this forum and have had ASI or whatever company SBC deals with check out my lines telling me things are perfect. 3) My web surfing can be lightening fast on and off but inevitably during typical web surfing sessions I get "hang" times when clicking links that can last up to 30 seconds and I even get timeouts on web sites that should not be timing out. Then my surfing speed will go back to super fast...then back to long "hang" times. 4) My tweak tests are all great. It is not a browser issue. I use Firefox, IE6, Opera...all act the same way. It is not a router issue. I disconnected the router and had a direct connection to my PC without the router and the exact same issues exist. 5) It is not a "slow PC" issue. My PC is blazing fast....new....self built Windows XP....1 gig RAM.....fast Intel Processor.....top-of-the-line components all around. 6) I believe it to be some sort of an "outside" network issue but I have no experience with how things such as RT networks and such work. 7) My father lives in the same town as me and has an equally fast PC and has none of these issues. No 30 second hang times. Super fast web surfing. He is also off an RT.....but a different one in another part of town. 8) I am looking for an explanation of what is causing my erratic web surfing issues. Why the 30 second hang times that come and go. DSLReports.com is a prime example. I can be going from link to link at lightening speed....but.....all of a sudden I am looking at a "time out" or a long "hang time' between the time it takes the next page to render. 9) Sorry for the rambling on. Any questions and I would be most pleased to answer them. Any advice you may have would be most welcome. 10) Thank you very much. -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.-- Robert Capa |

1 edit | I have the 5260 SpeedStream Modem and it is not upgradeable according to this: »The Unofficial SpeedStream 5260 ---> 5660 FAQ -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. -- Robert Capa |

2 edits | This is a typical situation for me. I just hit the »AT&T Northeast link and I got this after waiting several seconds. This happens enough of the time to be very annoying.
Note: My Modem is about 4 years old. It obviously works....but......could that be the problem here? -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. -- Robert Capa |

|
 | My fater has a brand new modem from his SBC/dsl installation a few months ago. Could I use that? Would I have to configure my router differently? |

If his modem is a 5100b and he had it set up to do the pppoe then you would have to put the modem in bridge mode, again that's only for the 5100b modem. |
|
 | So you think it could be the modem then Mr.Fixit? Based on the info I provided? |

This`Behavior has been over the last month or so for Me. It Does Not have any pattern that i can see. BK Well then it looks like my problem is the network which is outside of my home. Every test I have taken is fine. Just like you this behavior has been acting this way for well over a month. I wonder what the deal really is. Must be something in the RT's or larger network issues. What a shame to have a super fast connection only to be spoiled by a undefinable network problem. The fact that I can surf the internet and much of the time get fast speeds when clicking on links but then some of the time waiting 30 seconds really puts a major damper on my internet experience. I used to get consistent download speeds of 1280 down but now it's more around the 980 mark. That should not effect surfing speed though. I also used to never get the long "hang' times between clicking links like I get now. With the erratic behavior a technician would most likely just look at the tests for download speeds and see that there are no "bad wiring" issues inside or outside my house and conclude that nothing is wrong. But I know this is not right.......and there is really nothing I can do about it. I have to live with a less than stellar internet experience. If it keeps up then next year I go to cable. I hate to leave dsl because I have had it for 4 years. But this is just too aggravating. When I hit a link I never know whether it will take me 1/300th of a second to get to the page or 30 seconds. That is not good. Thank you to all who have so generously responded to me. It is appreciated very much. -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. -- Robert Capa |

 | reply to Edit This I'm right there with you! I posted a topic here: »[help] Problems with Pro Speed Consistency about the problems I was having and haven't yet gotten a solution. There is something disappointing going on for me as well and I wish I knew what it was - I had better speeds and consistency before I upgraded to the Pro Package.

 | I wonder what the real problem is. It has to be something. It has to be. |

We have DSL at our business in Norwich. We are located on Salem Turnpike and are RT fed.
We do not have the issues that you have described.
I'm not sure where our RT is located.
Not sure if this helps, but just wanted to pass it along.

 | reply to Edit This Either swap-out your modem with your dad's or insist on getting it replaced by SBC. |

 | I'll give the modem thing a try........but.........insisting on a new one from SBC won't work........I have had this one for 4 years. -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.-- Robert Capa |

 | reply to Edit This Update: I used to get 1280 down consistently. For the past few weeks I have been getting in the 700's down and sometimes a little higher. Plus I have to wait for long pauses between hitting links to many sites (including this one) that last for several seconds. How would you like to have DSL and have to wait between 7 and 30 seconds for the page to kick in. My PC has been checked from cover to cover......it can't be that. My wife and I share a router off the same connection and she has identical problems. That's been checked out and is perfect. It's not the router. I have tried two modems. That's not the problem either. I have tried everything. Something happened a few weeks back that slooooowed me down.....and.....I believe it is with the network outside of my home somewhere. What a frustrating problem this erratic dsl connection is. -- If your photographs aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.-- Robert Capa |
