Re: DSL network speed erratic.......unreliable.

Edit this,

Any chance of taking your PC to one of the other places you have used DSL in Norwich?

Again, just a random thought!

It's not impossible.....but......it would be quite an undertaking. My PC weighs a ton. It's custom built with a all metal Coolermaster tower.

The thing is though that it's not just my PC. My wife's has all the same pauses mine does and it is off the same connection.

Thank you for the idea Steve.

well it doesn't look like your completely breaking the connection to the net. It does OTOH look like something is being lost on the upstream.

Here is a very specific example of how my browsing experience is when the pauses are present.

In the first screencap the photo on the web page is being downloaded at 1.4kB/sec (painfully slow). The photo will very, very slowly begin to fill in on the page.......until.......several seconds later (in this case 18 seconds) the photo will then fill in completely in an instant because the download speed goes to 81kB/sec (in this case)....(see second sceencap). ****Note**** Please look to the lower right on the screencap at the DU Meter which indicates the speed at which the page is being received.

UPDATE!!!!!

A few weeks ago I upgraded to the 3000 down Pro package simply because it would only cost me an extra $3 per month for an additional 1500k down.

The problems that have been tortuously described in this thread have not changed.

My web browsing experience continues to be erratic. Often it is frustratingly sloooooow. I had a new NID put in by SBC.....I had a couple of "technicians" come into my house to check things out. While the tech was here he also experienced timeouts and some slooooooooow web browsing that does not happen continuously but erratically. You will be browsing along perfectly fine and all of a sudden you run into a patch of timeouts, long pauses, and sloooooow browsing in general. The tech marked me down as a NTF. NO TROUBLE FOUND!!!!

I figured I would just live with it and had hoped that things would get better in the future. I upgraded to the Pro package in the process hoping that maybe that would "fix" my problem. For an extra $3 a month....why not????

The bottom line is that nothing has changed. I waited quite a while to post this update because I continued to hope that things would get better. But, they are the same.......lousy.

I have been over to my fathers house (same town 4 miles away) several times and used his SBC DSL internet connected PC and the browsing was absolutely flawless. I hit a link and BOOM....I was at the web site instantly. I browsed for long periods of time with superb performance and I kept thinking...."This is how my web browsing is supposed to be". But it is not. Under identical circumstances browsing at my fathers is lightening fast and as smooth as silk. Hit a link and you're at the site instantly. In my case at my home I hit a link and it will do 1 of 3 things. 1)Go to the site instantly. 2)pause for 20 seconds or more and then go to the site. or 3)Timeout and never get to the site.

If I didn't have to pay the $200 dollar fee to get out of my SBC contract I would just get Adelphia Cable and be done with SBC for good. I can't live like this. Adelphia offers 4000 to 6000 down but I could care less about that. If they offered 1500 down and fast web browsing like I should be getting now with SBC I would be more than satisfied.

I may end up paying the $200 fee to jump ship if this keeps up. The tech that was here said to "keep a log" of when the problems occur. That is pretty much impossible because they appear on a moment to moment basis. The log book would be three inches thick.

I have posted a screencap of a typical browsing situation that I have become accustom to.

Is there anyone out there with these problems other than myself?
Note: I have tried 2 modems, 3 computers, a router, no router, line tests, speed tests, ping tests.....you name it I have tried it. Everything under the sun and NOTHING has made any difference at all. Please GOD help me!!!!!!
