Overspeculation...

People are blowing this out of proportion. In all likelihood, Google wants to link its datacenters by lighting its own fiber instead of paying ISPs a ridiculous amount of money. As was said on Slashdot, it's probably so they can sync data across regional datacenters more quickly.

I'll second that. Bandwidth is expensive, but overpriced...similar to how cable companies arrange their pricing. Google is making a wise move to getting their own pipes rather than paying someone.

Considering approximately 80% of fiber is the US is dark, why not?
