In all likelihood, Google wants to link its datacenters by lighting its own fiber instead of paying ISPs a ridiculous amount of money. As was said on Slashdot, it's probably so they can sync data across regional datacenters more quickly.

Charlotte, NC | I'll second that. Bandwidth is expensive, but overpriced...similar to how cable companies arrange their pricing. Google is making a wise move to getting their own pipes rather than paying someone.
Considering approximately 80% of fiber is the US is dark, why not?
