I don't think it's the matter of "being used to" the product, but what will protect you at all cost, to avoid nasty 'ware' from infecting your system.

The best way to gain some information, in regards to your online security, is going to our BBR Security forum. Reading thru the BBR Security FAQ wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Those links will get you far with what you need to do.

Personally, I think it might be best for you to try our various applications, and then choose the one that you (as the end-user) prefer. Something things to consider, as well: stabilization, and system resources. Some platforms don't mix too well with "certain" systems.

I use it and it works great. That being the AV and firewall. Free perks. Connection is smooth and steady w/ low pings.

Oh, just found it on Verizon here: »www2.verizon.net/update/msnwebinstall/ but it seems that it'll install everything once I click the "Install Now button. I only want the firewall ... not the MSN browser and the other stuff. Is there a way to request a CD or is there a FTP download?

Re: Who uses the free McAfee Anti-virus that comes

Well being I have an AMD system(I have 3 PCs all using either an XP-M cpu or 2 Opteron 64bit cpus or an A64 cpu and the CD wants an Intel cpu) I use AVG 7.0 and It's the Free version, I used to use version 6.0 as It was Free and have never had any problems, AVG I've read is small and the upgrades are free too.

I only use an MSN email address in conjunction with a verizon email address for outgoing email and I don't have any problems with My MSN Premium email, So I'm happy.

And as to web browsers I use Firefox 1.0 and I'm also happy with It too.

I've been all over the Secuirty forum, since I just got a Virus on my older Windows 98 computer, only had Dsl ONE week & caught the "Troj Agent JR" -just came out Jan 13th. Calamity Jane helped me CLean my system, it was amazing -here is the link »HiJackThis Help- How to open file-with what?
I had free AVAST on that computer, didn't have some critical windows updates, also did not have a Software Firewall, just the Router Firewall set to Medium & Ad-awre SE. I am wondering why AVAST did not catch this Troj ? SO I do quesiton some of the FREE firewalls. BUt those guys told me it was Nasty Malware, not a Virus really. Confusing.
This question is for my NEWER computer though, a windows XP pro -that the Nortons' will be expiring. I know on the Security forum, they think Little of Norton's and McAffee anti virus. They seem to love AVG, and recommend Avast alot. EVERYONE has a different opionion I guess. Norton's has always treated me well -I have the 2003 version and would not upgrade --if I do decide to renew my subscription. But Free McAffee is VERY tempting. I guess I could always delete it if I hated it ? Huh?

I use the free Version of Mcafee on all but 2 of my machines because it appears to do the job and it is free. Buying Anti Virus updates every year for more than one PC gets expensive.

To get a free MSN Premium account you must do it through the Verizon software. Once that's established you can download the freebies from the MSN Member Center.

Re: Who uses the free McAfee Anti-virus that comes

I had been using the Norton that came on my pc and just buying the yearly subscriptions. I was not happy with that any longer since it was a 2002 version and so many changes have been made since then. I wanted a new version not just definitions. I chose to go with the new free McAfee antivirus. I competely deleted all traces of Norton from my pc. I followed the directions on the Norton website. And made sure to delete all the scheduled tasks also. There are many parts to Norton antivirus so make sure all are gone!

Then I installed the McAfee antivirus. I already had the McAfee center on my pc because I have their antispyware. It loaded right up no problems at all. I then ran the updates and got all the latest definitions and updates. It sets itself up to do a weekly scan on Friday at 8pm which was fine but you can change that. I found the whole install process totally painless and easy.

I ran a scan on my pc and it found sevearal files it called something like programs you don't want. They were all files associated with HP and the backweb feature of HP which I knew of. But Norton had never ever even mentioned them.
I was very impressed with the results of the scan and how fast it ran. So over all I am please with it thus far.

I have zonealarm pro firewall but it is an older version and I have considered trying the McAfee free one.

If you have a 2003 version of Norton that is really pretty old and you might want to consider getting a new version not just the defintions subscriptions.

McAfee virus protection and firewall get pretty good reviews. Almost all the major programs are good including the free AVG software that I used before McAfee. So far, I've been impressed with the McAfee program.

The software can be downloaded without installing the Verizon software or the MSN Browser. You can sign up for your MSN premium account using Internet Explorer (Firefox did not work for me for this chore). Once you have an MSN premium subscription you can download the McAfee software. The specific steps have been posted in this forum so do a search if you can't figure it out. You start by clicking on the link for member center and it pretty much follows from there.

Personally I never liked Norton which I always felt was way too bloated with features I did not want.

OK more questions! I have 2 PCs at home.... an XP pro and a Windows 98 computer, I take it I can only download ONE set of McAfee Virus scan and Firewall --right (per account)? (I currently have FREE Avast on old computer & Norton's 2003 on XP) .... and do most of you USE the McAfee FIREWALL instead of the Windows FIREWALL that is already in the Windows Service Pack 2 (if you have it) ---do you PREFER the windows Firewall or the McAfee Firewall? There simply are too many options here !

I've downloaded the McAfee software for both my desktop and Laptop. No problem and neither machine runs the MSN browser or Verizon software.

I normally use Firefox browser and tonight I was downloading a McAfee update when they asked me to log in with my MSN info and install a plug-in for my "netscape" browser. this was unusual because the virus updates are usually automatic and don't require a log in.

I use the McAfee firewall and do not enable the windows SP2 firewall. I read somewhere that most commercial firewalls offer more comprehensive protection than the Windows firewall. The free Zone Alarm firewall gets high marks too.

Personally I would never just use the Windows xp sp2 firewall. I currently have zonealarm pro and love it. Have used it for many many years with no problems. I need to update however and am going to try the free McAfee firewall since it has been getting very good reviews. I will immediately go to Steve Gibsons site and check it for stealth on the leak tests there. IF it performs well I will keep it and see how I like it. NOthing lost since I would be changing to a new zonealarm pro version anyway and if I don't like the McAfee I will just get the ZA which you can get at a discount through verizon.

Re: Who uses the free McAfee Anti-virus that comes ...

When comparing AV programs, all I look for is application stability and ease of use. I don't find much value in comparing their AV capabilities.

In my experience, people aren't infected by new viruses; they are infected by viruses where definitions have long been published by the AV manufacturer. It's the user who fails to schedule updates. In the case where I did discover a new variant, McAfee and Symantec both failed to detect it anyway (TrendMicro succeeded).

And if you're one of those who keep your viruses updated, chances are, you also keep Windows updated, have a firewall and are cautious about the attachments you open... all of which minimizes the value the AV capabilities.

That's not to say I don't use one. I have Symantec AV Corporate to manually scan the files I download. I chose it because it installs and runs well on my system and was free. I won't bother trying MSN's McAfee.

Now, comparing Symantec with McAfee based on other factors. I liked McAfee VirusScan early on ('95), but hated the UI with McAfee Office. Not only was it tacky and non-intuitive, it caused problems with our Win98 installs. I haven't tried McAfee since then, so things might be better now. Symantec (Corporate, at least) has always been stable. My only problems were due more to Windows service packs than anything else.

If I were in your shoes, I'd install MSN's McAfee and see if it sits well with my system. If it doesn't bark, keep it and stop paying for Symantec. If there are problems, revert back.

I know I am being thick headed so bear with me. I still can't figure out how to d/l the firewall software without having all the other stuffs installed. When I go to the link you guys said it says in step 3 i will "Install MSN Premium Internet Software". Well, I assume it means the whole thing .. browser and all? But I just want the firewall.

Another question... Ok, I see it recommended I use the FREE McAfee firewall instead of the Windows SP2 firewall. BUt I also have the Hardware Firewall on the Versalink 327 W Router Verizon sent me, so do I still need a more powerful firewall such as McAfee on my computer? Or do only people with Routers without the firewall feature need the better software firewall ??
