Re: DNS slowdown in Philly? Hooper. I've been trying to figure out how to switch and get off the Philly DNS servers. Can you help. I have a WRT54G router and a Westell 2200 modem. I need very detailed instructions on how to do this. I know little about computers. Thanks and I hope you can help |

 | That doesn't work for me Hooper, hehe. My connection goes offline if I use those DNS servers you posted. |

Sorry for the confusion. I am using a Win2003 Server for DNS and have about 20 forwarders defined. |
|
 | Those work, thanks. Download rates increased from 25kbps to around 56 kbps. Still really slow considering I normally average around 200 kbps. but it's better than it was previously. |

|
 | reply to starmage Sorry, I don't know how to edit my previous post (can't find the option). ANyway, that increase in speed was just a short burst, I re-run the speed test a couple of times and went back to my old slow average. Ah well! |

 | reply to hp550c It slows down only at night time, works fine in the morning though. |

 | reply to hp550c I had the same problem with DNS lookups taking forever or timing out recently in Boston with Verizon DSL (over the last 3-4 weeks). I switched the DNS servers from:
151.203.0.84 151.203.0.85
to:
199.45.32.40 199.45.32.41
and pages now load almost instantly.
Thanks! |

 | me too.. i'm in Boston.. same thing with
151.203.0.84 151.203.0.85
sucking ass. good thing this thread came up in google! those other dns servers worked great.
i would email verizon and give them the heads up, but they don't give me that option.. oh well... i'm sure less patient, less savvy customers will jump on a 19.99 cable offer cuz of this... |

 | I've had the same dns issues for the past week or so and just changed my dns servers to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and my pages load unbelievablly fast now. Found the server info here: »[trouble] Slow down in New York City again.l |

 | reply to thermus THANK YOU THERMUS!!! I have been on the damn internet for two days trying to get my speed back up after an inexplicable, overnight slowdown that was driving me insane. I, too called Verizon and they did nothing and then called to say all was resolved....bastards.
I'm in Camden, Maine and took a shot at those DNS number you switched to and now I'm flying again.
We'll see for how long, but after all the Safari gymnastics I've tried the last few days I am so grateful I ran into your post. Ridiculous, how happy I am at this moment...thanks again! |

 | reply to hp550c I've had this slowdown 4 times (that I can tell) now with two days in a row. Last night the problem went away around midnight. I can't switch DNS because I'm using the router through a wireless connection. The wait time was 30 minutes and I didn't have the patience to bitch anyone out yesterday. Today I called as soon as the problem started (around 2PM). I got into a fight with the tech guy who was trying to tell me that he'll walk me through diagnostics even after I kept explaining to him that it was not my computer. He said he couldn't help me if I wasn't going to cooperate. Needless to say I got a supervisor who was very helpfull. Although she didn't know what the problem was, she went out of her way to try and figure it out. I've got an open ticket at least and I know someone is looking into it while not thinking me crazy, because she even found irregular settings with my connection. She acknowledged ongoing problems in NY but not Philly. We'll see what happens (if anything).
Anyway, who can tell me why I can't receive mail from this site in order to register? And at this lousy speed, I can't do much investigating around the site on my own. |

I can't switch DNS because I'm using the router through a wireless connection. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > right click Local Area Connection > Properties > highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > click radio button in front of Use the following DNS server addresses. Enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. Click OK > OK. Done |

 | freenow, that doesn't work. For one, I'm on a Mac. Second, I'm using a wireless card, with the "Use DHCP Server" option. No other settings work, unless I'm missing something.
My DSL speed is back up now, although I haven't checked the actual numbers. Last week, it came back up around this time too. |
|
 | Worked for me too in Concord, MA. Many thanks! |
