[Other Providers] vonage vs att pros and cons

I have been using Vonage for 1 month now and I must say that the system works well most of the time. The biggest problem that I have encounter so far is fast busy signal when calling from a analog line to my voice over ip home line rings fast busy 10% but if you keep trying it will eventually connect and 0% success using a data modem. I have also been looking at ATT service and would like to know how Att compares to Vonage. How can they offer Modem and fax support and Vonage don't. Has anyone been able to dial up using a modem via a Vonage or Att line. How satisfy are you with your service what problems have you had. I am just not sure if Vonage is the most reliable service out there.

I read a post that stated that modem calling through a Vonage line was working up until a week ago.
Contact Vonage. It may only be a temporary issue.
Good Luck.

I have been very happy with ATT CV for the nearly 3 months that I have had it. I think ATT has a feature called Do not disturb that Vonage does not offer--which I love cuz I cuz I can choose to not have any calls come through at night when I am sleeping or watching a movie or such...the calls can just go to voicemail or if it is an emergency they can get through.
This is the one feature I think ATT has that most others do not. I like the voice quality as well and the whole family is very happy with it in general.

DND, AKA "do not disturb" is a well known feature. Voicepulse had it and so did Broadvoice. Vonage does not have it, but I got a clue that it may be coming. If I log into my Vonage account and direct all incoming calls to voicemail that's the same as any DND. So, without getting technical, Vonage has it also.

Thanks for teh correction..I was rather sure Vonage did not have this service yet, but I think you are right...it is something they really do need to add to compete with other VOIP providers.

I'm surprised with all the features that Vonage has that most others don't, I didn't see DND included in the features.

Vonage listed features:
Voicemail Plus
Caller ID with Name
Call Waiting
Call Forwarding
3-Way Calling
Call Transfer
Click-2-Call
Call Return
Caller ID Block
Repeat Dialing
International Call Block
Ring Lists
Call Hunt
Charges Xtra for:
311 Dialing
Add a Line
SoftPhone
Toll Free Plus- 4.99/month + 100 minutes
Fax Line- 9.99/month
Enhanced 411 Dialing- .99/call
Virtual Phone Number
Plus more.

Looks interesting.

I agree with lots of posts, but I do tend to have issues with grossly incorrect statements that can cause harm to others. Nothing personal.
With the help of one of your threads: A lot of us have noticed the use of ? marks on titles when someone is reporting a possible downage.

And I will always fight for your right to express your own opinion!...As long as it goes along with mine!

I am an ATT CV customer now for over 6 months after coming over from Vonage. My advice is to keep Vonage and try out ATT CV within the free trial period. You can use them both together and compare/contrast them. Then keep the one you like and cancel the other. Your own experiences with either may vary so it is always best to try out and see how it works out for you.

Doc has a great suggestion here, but you should keep one thing in mind: If you try out ATT CV and Vonage at the same time, you should place ATT's and Vonage's TAs both behind a home router. I've found ATT's service to work better (generally speaking) when the TA is in front of the router, but your ATT TA will cripple another VoIP service that's placed behind it. I say this, because for a short period, I had two ATT TAs (a Linksys and a DLink). Calls from the DLink (placed behind the Linksys TA) had very high latency and choppiness--it was because of the QoS on the Linksys.

You may need to place the ATT TA in front of your router for activation, but to test both services fairly, they should both be behind the router (or if you keep your ATT TA in front, don't use both lines at the same time).

Thats only a half truth. Using Vonage this way lacks the EMERGENCY ring through.

Which providers offer 'Emergency ring through?'

I couldn't tell you but thats how DND works. You get a VM message stating "whatever" proceeded by if this is an emergency press "num", the call then rings through. Setting forward to VM on the Vonage service still rings the line one time before being forwarded. Really not a DND.

Another annoying call feature on Vonage that needs some modification is the call forwarding. You can forward a call if "call" is not answered to another number. Works great except when your on the phone and another call comes in which you choose not to take. That call then forwards to the third number. It just lacks granularity and control that other providers offer. Some offer CF if busy, control via phone (Vonage does not), CF during selected times, the list goes on. It would be nice if one didn't have to have access to a browser to control and change phone features. In many instances it's a pain in the you know what!
