ZWill join:2000-09-08 Seattle, WA | Loss of Sync -- Why? So far I have been pretty impressed with GTE's ADSL service. I have the 768/128 plan. But lately, I have noticed some instances where I lose sync. I have been troubleshooting it and trying to track down the cause. I have come to a couple of possibilities, but I wanted to post here and see if anyone can think of anything else...
GTE/Verizon internet, Orkit modem, Netgear RT311, two analog phones on the line, two analog modems on the line, microfilters included in DSL startup package (4) on each analog device.
Here are the facts... . I usually lose sync when picking up one of the phones in the house. . I always lose it when I pick up more two analog phones at the same time. . I sometimes lose it for no reason at all. . I get line noise (hissing) on all of my phones... much more so than other people I know with DSL, however some days, there's almost NO noise. . I have tried new microfilters (although same brand) on different phones, unplugged phones I thought were problematic, etc. Same problems. . Friend of mine just down the street has same exact configuration and service and has no problems. He and I are on the same CO.
Has anyone had this problem? I am considering contacting GTE/Verizon and requesting a new modem. If that doesn't do anything, I might go out an buy some other brand of microfilters.
I would like to know if somebody else has seen and/or fixed a similar problem before I call Verizon and get put on hold for the rest of the afternoon.
Thanks! |

 | Re: Loss of Sync -- Why?possible causes did you have 2 lines(#s) in your house before? I have found cases where the previous installer used a single network isolation device (NID) and worked both #s through the one box. When replaced with a correct multiline box these connection problems were resolved apparently the test jack with both #s tied to it acted like a cable side tap and caused signal loss. Other things I have seen are 2 line phones within the house, burglar alarms with cheap wire causing bleed over, bad filters, bad modems. Troubleshooting DSL problems can only be done by exclusion try removing 1 variable at a time to see what is the true cause. Good luck! |

All great ideas! I never had 2 lines in this house, although I'm pretty sure the previous owner did. After moving in, I had to rewire the "office" room's phone jack because the "line 2" T&R pair were wired into the center positions on the jack. I will check out the NID and see how it's wired. That's probably where the signal loss is coming from. |

Re: Loss of Sync -- Why? Are any of your phones 900 meg scrambled cordless units? Just a thought.... If so try without the filters on those jacks (-o: -- hubgal -- hubgal [text was edited by author 2000-10-14 12:00:13] |

1) Maybe symantics or how you worded the sentence, but be sure to place the filters at the wall, not at each device.
2) Also to test which one is problematic, unplug all of them and plug then one at a time to see which one causes the condition. Also, if it drops sync when all devices are unplugged, then it way be the wiring somewhere.
3) Got a flyer last week. RadioShack now has DSL inline filters at about $10.00 each.
Good Luck |
