BEFSX41 Firmware 1.52.3 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE

Linksys phone tech support has started to spread BEFSX41 firmware 1.52.3 around. It is also possible that Linksys release this version on their web site. This means that its time to share our findings about this new beta firmware. The user YeOldeStonecat was kind enough to share the firmware with us. You can find the firmware at the link below:

The user YeOldeStonecat has provided the following link to download the firmware:

As per forum rule, I have mirrored the firmware to my personal site in order for this thread to comply with those rules. Feel free to use either source for downloading the firmware.
Flogator's Web Site

Until Linksys makes a decision of releasing this firmware, it is being considered beta material. This means use the firmware at your own risk. Linksys will not provide support on this firmware yet. For the users willing to try it out, please post your findings to this thread. For reference purposes, some users discussed the firmware in the thread below:

Re: BEFSX41 Firmware 1.52.3 - POST YOUR RESULTS HE

In general, BEFSX41 firmware 1.52.3 has fixed a numerous bugs . However, it also did introduced new ones . Some users even experience router lockup or DSL problems. For those reasons, I have recommended Linksys not to release this firmware and wait until the next beta. However, Linksys might decided to do otherwise. Thereof, I am sharing with you the deltas I have experiences myself between 1.51.00 and 1.52.3.

Bugs present in 1.51.00 and that have been fixed in 1.52.3
  • The bug called "SNMP walk fails when DDNS is enabled" is now fixed.
  • The bug called "Strange logs with VPN passthrough" is now fixed.
  • The bug called "Some router's web page items take forever to load" is now fixed.

Bugs introduced by 1.52.3
  • A new bug called "Filter don't work or crash the router" has been introduced.
  • A new bug called "Intrusion logs don't show up" has been introduced.
  • The feature "UPnP" does not work.

Bugs present in 1.51.00 and that are still present in 1.52.3
  • The bug called "MIB sysUpTime updated 10 times too fast" is still present.
  • The bug called "Idle TCP NAT entry gets removed after 10 minutes" is still present.
  • The feature "QoS" does not work
  • The limitation called "VPN shared secret limited to 24 characters" is still present.
  • The bug called "No connect button in manual keying" is still present.
  • The bug called "Access to router's web pages sometimes return a blank page" is still present.
  • The limitation called "The 'All PCs' check box has disappeared from 'Edit List' filter dialog" is still present.
  • The bug called "Filter URL/KeyWord match logs are corrupted when SPI firewall is enabled" could not be tested because of a new bug.
  • The limitation called "Filter logs do not indicate which filter number was hit" could not be tested because of a new bug.
  • The bug called "Web filters causing the router to randomly reboot" is still present.
  • The bug called "Accessing a long URL string cause reboots" is still present.

Re: BEFSX41 Firmware 1.52.3 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE

Copied my post here, as this thread was created after I hit submit.
I gave this one a whirl, it would not let me connect out after the upgrade. Obtained IP, Gateway, DNS but no connection past router. No ping of ISP gateway. Connected to SB4200 Did a hard reset, factory defaults, etc.. Not a whole lot of time to test this one as I need my connection up and running. Noticed a new page, HideSystemMenu.htm Current MTU status is now part of the status page. New DDNS entry PeanutHull? BackupnRestore.htm is still there.
Maybe give this a second chance this weekend when I have more time to try and get to work with modem.

Flog......

I agree with your posting here. I'm doing a cut & paste on the items I found, and entered into the other thread:

Within 2 days I encountered a DNS issue (could Ping IP of DLSR but not www.dslreports.com) Had an IP, but could't DNS. Fixed by power cycle. It occurred the next day... That's when I went back. Once back at V1.45.7 all was OK.

Other things noticed. Logging was absolutely horrendous, either locally, or with Latest Wallwatcher. Would not log incoming probes after about 2 minutes. Outgoing locations sometimes stopped being logged after time server access. Speaking of time server access, Logs reported multiple time servers being accessed (that I hear aren't really occurring ???) when a user specified time server was entered. Logs were also full of nonsense posts to Port 0, and random resets that LED's didn't confirm..
Using blocking by keyword would reset BEFSX41 before it could be verified if it worked or not, let alone logged. (I had been warned that timestamps were inoperative) So I didn't try it. During the setup screens the "WHITE PAGES" involving reload or back/fwd were more numerous than V1.45.7 but far less numerous than any 1.5x. that preceeded V1.52.3.

The random Resets I see on Java based speedtests were not evident on this version, (But I encounter on V1.45.7).

Speedtests, were identical to V1.45.7. ftp transferrs seemed identical to V1.45.7, too.

I went back to V1.45.7 after encountering DNS issues for the 2nd time, that occurred simultaneously with SBC Problem in Chicagoland. Couldn't determine if problem was SBC or BEFSX41 firmware version without changing one of the variables... I went back to V1.45.7 and everything returned to normal (And I never was affected by the problems that SBC had in Chicagoland that weekend, I may add).

Re: BEFSX41 Firmware 1.52.3 - POST YOUR RESULTS HE

Before anyone ask for it, here are the hidden pages you may access using that firmware:
  • "http://192.168.1.1/FilterMAC.htm" (never saw that one before)
  • "http://192.168.1.1/HideSystemMenu.htm" (never saw that one before)
Additionally, there are some non-accessible web page. Those are the same found in firmware 1.50.18 but that I have summarized below:
  • Same wireless "Status" HTML page found in 1.50.18
  • Same wireless "System Performance" HTML page found in 1.50.18
Have a look to the 1.50.18 post for more information regarding those non-accessible web pages:

WARNING TO ALL TESTERS: Leave the "Upstream Bandwidth" under "QoS" section to "Auto". Setting value manually to low value might render your router locked in constant reboot cycle. RESET BUTTON WILL NOT RESTORE ROUTER TO FACTORY DEFAULTS!

For lack of logging you might use temporally solution: in Log4Manage.htm enable syslog.

I tried enabling other logging options in Log4Manage.htm but all that did was dramatically increase the nonsense posts, and didn't help on incoming or outgoing post logging.

Hi......Just thought I would jump in and say, thanks to Everyone forum !! Sorry If this isnt the right place for this post........but short on time. ( wife wants to wallpaper )

I have had this ( thing ) of a router for about 15 months now, and it has never worked properly. CAlled tech support about 15 times....good luck on that. Today the idiot told me to buy a new router. Their tech support must be in India or somewhere around there cuz I can hardly understand a word they are saying. Anyways cut to short....I have installed the 1.52.3 firmware and the router has been actual UP for about 5 hours straight at 150K. I was just about to toss it out the window and buy anything else but a Linksys.

Anyways...thanks a ton.

1.52.3: The feature "UPnP" does not work.
Found that one to be VERY bizarre!
A firmware update that completely destroys UPnP functionality.
I don't use UPnP but nevertheless...that's pretty bad.

Thanks for sharing this though Flogator See Profile.
I always appreciate any info you bring us on new Linksys firmware with the BEFSX41. Do you know if the tracert bug was ever fixed?
We're finally seeing a new and possibly future firmware releases.
EDIT: I'm hoping this and future firmware releases just FIX all the past issues.
Linksys SHOULD NOT ADD ANYTHING NEW in terms of FEATURES to the router until all bugs are fixed!

I must admit that very few DSL users have tried this firmware. For the benefits of everyone, if you are a DSL user using a BEFSX41 running firmware 1.52.3, could you please post some feedback? Thanks.

well i finally got a connection after updating to this fw. i dont use much of teh features. i bought this for teh firewall. software firewalls are junk and most take too much resources. i have onboard nvidia firewall that i liked alot. but again it takes up alot of resources..and it doesnt play well with XP SP2..which is junk aswell.so i got rid of it. i couldnt get this firmware to work with SP2..not sure if it was me or SP2. i say SP2 hehe

SBC DSL

Speedstream 5100b Modem set to PPP on comp/router

PPPOE set on router

MTU set manual to 1492

No MAC cloning.

so far so good. anything else ya want to know or have me try, PM me or just reply to this post..i really love this interface compared to 1.45.7.

About 6 months ago I suddenly couldn't use my sx41 for some reason. Came here, saw a post by Flogator addressing similar problems with an option of trying the then beta 1.51.0 firmware. Yesterday I couldn't connect, thought it was the isp (sbc yahoo dsl) so I blew it off. Today it was still down when I got home... started doing this and that and while looking at the modem I suddenly remembered that I also have a router, hehe. I then of course remembered the last time the router suddenly became very uncooperative.

So, I come here, find the linksys forum, find this thread, and there's Flogator again showing off a new beta, a new beta that once again has my router working again. Thank you very much Mr. Flogator, I won't be fiddling with the settings to "test" it beyond the fact that it corrected whatever suddenly went wrong with version 1.51.0, but maybe that says something. God bless you.

Just brought the old BEFSX41 out of mothballs to see what this new firmware was all about.

I was on v1.45.7 and just upgraded to v1.52.3. Now what I did was disconnect everything from the router except my PC. Unplugged the router. Held the reset button. Plugged in the router. Held the button in for 60 seconds. Unplugged the router. Let go of the reset button. Plugged in the router. Upgraded the firmware from the Firmware Upgrade page in the router. Let the router reboot. Unplugged the router. Held the reset button. Plugged in the router. Held the button in for 60 seconds. Unplugged the router. Let go of the reset button. Plugged in the router. Let the router boot. Set up all my settings.

And here I am...I noticed all the configuration screens/pages loaded ultra-fast. I had speed problems on v1.50.18. Web pages load fast. Everything is fast...so far.

I'll post again after I have some ports forwarded and run some tests and such.

Absolutely *love* the new configuration setup screens, though! Very professional looking.

EDIT: I'm on cable not DSL.

There must be some kind of confict with the SB4200. I am sure I had the 1.52.0 some what working with an AMBIT modem but after a week I flashed it back to 1.51. After switching modems I can not even get that firmware to work with this SB4200-0.4.4.0-SCM06-NOSH I have reset and reset and reset over and over every possible way... It will pull an IP if I reset the modem but nothing will route. Yet the route table is correct. It can not ping the gateway ISP IP from the DIAG screen. I managed to catch part of the log after the flash and it only showed a dropped packet from the DNS IP on the reboot. Once the Linksys pulls an IP, if you save any page on the linksys forcing a warm restart it will not pull any IP from the modem. I have to power cycle the modem again to get the IP back. So I am back to the 1.51 which will obtain IP and route right away. Here is a part of the log. This is in between having to enable logging after reset defaults and resets... I've gone as far and disabled every bit of protection a NAT router should protect from and it still fails. Sorry long post.

Re: BEFSX41 Firmware 1.52.3 - POST YOUR RESULTS HE

I am running a SB4100 with firmware 1.4.9.2 and the Linksys BEFSX41 with 1.52.3 and I get an IP from my cable company just fine.

No problems with 1.52.3 yet, but I'm just an everyday user.

Just wanted to add to my original post and reply to yours regarding modems & possible conflicts.

My modem is a Toshiba PCX2600 & I only use static IPs. I have a static IP with my ISP & I turn off the DHCP server on the router & use static IPS for all my PCs connected to the router.
