SBC Redback Configuration Change?

System is FreeBSD 5-STABLE, Westell WireSpeed and SpeedStream 5260 Ethernet, line has tested good, yadda. I know what I'm doing.

Seems SBC's changed their authentication, which is resulting in absolutely abysmal speeds. (4KB/s typical on a 1.5Mbit.) This change happened at most two days ago. Radius is no longer passing connection speed, and MTU/MRU is also changed. I'm seeing LCP Proto early, and LCP code 0x8021 (encryption enable). According to my ISP, this is also affecting Linksys customers.

Anyone know the exact changes, and how to get working with them again? (First person to say 'buy a $FAVORITE_BRAND' or 'use Windows' gets hit with a 5ESS.)

It's kind of sad, really.
I'm recovered, but I still do it for fun.

If your ISP is not sbis then you need to post in SBC Direct.

My ISP is not SBIS, nor do I have access to the SBC Direct forum. Either way, who my ISP is, is irrelevant since this change affected all customers in the Cleveland area including SBIS. And frankly, my ISP is well out of their league on this one.

If your ISP uses ASI then you need to post in SBC Direct. Anyone can post in SBC Direct, you just can't read other posts.

No changes here, but there was some network balancing done in the last two weeks. You might also want to poke around for threads about problems in and around Cleveland since the first of the month. There are no widespread issues reported this week.

Authentication can't change your speeds unless there is some dynamic profile setting your ISP is supposed to pass to ASI, but your ISP is running their own RADIUS server in any case.

Given the equipment you listed you probably can't see sync rates but if so, check that.

Otherwise you'll have to contact the ASI techs in SBC Direct.

If your ISP is "out of their league" then you may have indeed found the problem.

oh yeah he's right.

post in sbc direct, you need help regarding ASI's router...but honestly, since they only pass along layer 2 information I don't know what to expect from them.

sounds like your ISP's LNS and radius/ldap is the concern here.

It can if they are passing down the atm profile via radius/ldap....

things only get more complicated every day

Yeah I typed that wrong and fixed it while you posted the correction. I meant the DSLAM/RT port bitrates not the Redback throughput limiters.

And yes, indeed, it is getting more complicated every day.

Yeah, posted in SBC Direct. My ISP is hopeless. It's definitely not a change on their end; they're terrified to even look at Radius the wrong way, forget making any configuration changes whatsoever. The way they're setup though, auth goes through this jumbled mess. To top things off, I'm in the area that got nailed by the ATM failure last week, so I'm more than a little unhappy overall. (Especially since I'm also having occasional sync flakiness that I think can be attributed to a fiber cut last year.)

Gonna have to talk to someone at SBC for sure though. It's requesting CHAP81, I give it CHAP81, and the Redback's LCP flooding worse than a misconfig'd Descend TNT-MAX. Never seen anything like it.

That would be kinda hard in the world of L2TP and Ameritech. Remember the ATM profiles in this region are mapped statically on the LAC, errrr - ASI side.

We do actually have an ASI area. Even though you posted in SBC Direct, I'll toss this over to ASI. First legitimate thread there in months.

Whee!
Sad when ASI is more responsive than my ISP. Their sole response so far; "we filed a TT, they tested the line OK, switch to Windows." Been with them for over a decade, too. Sheesh.

The really fun part is that AFAIK, I'm the only customer they have out of BEREOH23, so of course it must just be me. But the recently patched fiber on Bagley is right in a flooding area, thanks to the city's moronic idea of an underpass. ;P

SBC can't provide for you, or you just have a killer deal?

I'll point this out to Cain - he's on the ASI side.

Combo of the two.
I have 1.5/256 (originally 768/128) with a static IP. The static costs me an extra $5/mo. Plus I've got a mailserver, webserver, etc here, and I've never had bandwidth problems unless they've been circuit problems. Never had a reason to complain till now. (Also used to work for them, so.. )

Just had the line die for unknown reason; didn't have debug on, best guess is maybe LCP whacking the route. Took four tries to get it back up with the working config; doing the connected 5s, drop, try again dance. Weird.

Knocked off again. Modem didn't lose sync, but all ATM died again. Finally timed out on LCP, redial was connect 5s, disconnect, over and over and over again. Finally back up. Took the opportunity to reset the Westell and the system.

This is getting much worse, definitely. I'm getting more and longer periods of packetloss now too.

I moved the response to the SBC Direct Thread.

This is an ISP Issue. I'll elaborate more in the other thread.

Not in the Ameritech region.
