niko01 join:2004-01-19 Houston, TX | oh dear Lord I can't believe that anyone would want the ban lifted. Stuck on a plane for 4 hours with some loud-mouth jackass blabbing not a foot away - having to talk over the loud-mouth 17 year old girl sitting behind you - "like, oh my GAWD..." - who of course is purposely talking loud in order to catch the attention of the 20-something rebel without a clue talking to his buds on the ground about all the super-important stuff they will do when he lands... and on and on. I've seen this in my nightmares.... the horror....
Bottom line - if you really think that the outside world can't survive 3-4 straight hours without hearing from you, you need to get over yourself.

 | Amen.
I would never thought that could be any situation worse than putting up with a screaming baby during flight (mostly because those poor souls are enduring painful earaches). But having to put up with those lingering pompous, loud phone conversations, particularly in first class, is far worse. It's bad enough to have to endure them while on the ground. Delta Crown rooms have a quiet zones where cell phone usage is forbidden.
The airlines should have a small restricted area for cell phone users in the back of the plane, just like they did for smokers in the seventies. |

Frequent travelers would be the most likely users of cell phones and they normally get preferential treatment (first seating, seating near the front, etc), so I guess the rear of the plan could be the "quiet" zone. |

The article says the plane will use a type of transceiver. That means a handoff to a roaming carrier which means roaming charges for those that do not carry those plans. It also states that the handsets will have to be capable of transmitting less than the 0.6 watt it normally transmits. Lastly and for those that have used Airfone; line of site works differently and unpredictably for a cellphone at higher altitudes. Yuo expect the phone to work the same way it does on the ground. It won't! The technology will be no different, just that you added a pico cell (middle man) between you and the receiving party. This will not be a free ride. |
