Actually, this would be quite *feasable*, especially considering Comcast's plans for the *analog* side of cable TV.

Specifically, Comcast is planning nothing less than the *complete elinimation* of analog cable in all their markets by 2009. Digital cable will be the standard. Digital cable occupies less bandwidth than analog cable, plain and simple. A typical Comcast HFC system has six hundred 256QAM digital cable channels, plus another 100+ analog cable channels. (This does *not* include the single 256QAM channel used by cable modems.) Here's the surprise factor: the analog channels use as much bandwidth as the digital cable channels, despite that there are only one-sixth as many analog channels.

However, in order for this to work, Comcast *must* embark on a massive customer promotion (bigger than any promotion its ever done) to get their customers to switch, and the switch also can't cost them any more than all-analog does today. And the promotion must address their *entire* customer base: new customers and existing customers alike (in fact, *especially* existing customers, who are most likely to have a *box mix* of analog and digital boxes).

Comcast will have to keep upping the speeds no matter what. I don't think they are too worried about FIOS right now, but they definitely should be worried about the bells 10~25mb VDSL/ADSL2 offering "triple play" services.

To be sure, it may be awhile before SBC, Bell South, etc., are able to make it widely available. But any responses by Comcast aren't going to happen overnight either.

Re: Comcast considering offering 100 megabit internet

It's not just so much what Comcast will do but how others will follow. This is why all ISP's are now offering much faster speeds.
I am a online gamer. (XBox) and for those that aren't to aware of what going on in the gaming industry it is going like crazy from all ages all over the world. Microsoft new this and is driving hard for the big piece of the pie. Well these game require bandwidth and yes you will only get what is at the other end of the pipe line but if the other end is running faster you can bet they have a much easier chance of smooth game play. For the gamers here you know what it's like to lose a game and feel it was because of some bullet lag ect. Well these people if they could get something better they would in a heart beat trust me, I'm one of them. So yes it is about the speed. Plus with Comcast being a big ISP good chance you might hook up with other same users. Today the internet is being used for so many things but we are getting limited to how many of these things we can do at the same time. Times now are changing at a very fast rate being TV, gaming ect.. but it all requires bandwidth. also they say by what 2006? all TV's will be broadcast HD? weather it really comes then or not we need to be ready for ALL these new changes and I think it would be better to have a little more than you need than not enough. It just seems like a constant battle between everyone just to offer just a little more than the next but not more than they have to. We are still waiting for our Bandwidth increase here and I check every day just for that extra 384 in upload. I myself like comcast and have never had any troubles with them but if I had a choice for a much faster service I would go with who had it. That's just business and I'm sure comcast knows it.
So if you have it? Give it up and I will settle for what comes my way and then take the measures to clean it up along the way. You say I have 100 mbps and for some reason only getting 50 mbps? I think I can handle that until you figure it out and I for sure wont be going no place different, that's for sure.
Well that was just my thought but we all know that wont happen. Would be cool though

Though I'm not a "big" gamer, I believe gaming requires more than bandwidth. It requires more than just the remote server doing its job, and having the capacity. If you noticed, the way the internet is completely structured, you have everything to consider - specifically the routing that it takes to arrive at point B, and back. The routers along the way make that happen. Sure, you can have quite a large pipe of 100 Mbit/sec and vice versa for the remote server; but, that doesn't do any good without the quality ping times, along the way.

I've gamed with a simple 3 Mbit/sec pipe in the past, and while that speed may be blowing away into oblivion as time goes by, the ping times were great; no lags, etc. I was quite satisfied. Reliability, as I said my first post of this thread, is a great factor to consider in all internet connections.

I don't think most people would need those types of speeds plus the price on that if it is every offered you would think would be pretty high. Comcast says that they want to offer it, but I'm not so sure if that really is a realistic goal.
And there is no reason any PC user would need more than 64MB's of RAM

Funny, the digital cable channels in my area are 64QAM modulated.

Anyways, despite how interestingly insightful your post was, I still can't see how 100 megabits down could even be possible using the same equipment everybody is using now, given that even an 8Mhz wide 256QAM modulated downstream channel can only deliver around 51 Megabits of bandwidth.

Unless there's a way to somehow double channel size while maintaining backwards-compatibility with existing equipment, I can't see it happening.

100 megabits is almost overkill in and of itself. I'd be happy with even 10 megabits at this point.

I think the original quote was no reason why any PC user would need more than 64KBs of RAM.
