Re: Silencing the Critics: ISearch/IDownload Cool, and isn't that whole response beautiful? Simply written, simply to the point. Yeah, it'd be funny to see if MS gets involved... Somehow I doubt the grey/crap ware folks of the net would try legal action on them!
Maybe this will help better define what "spyware" is and curb any further attempts by the racketeering greyspy folks to sneak around so much.
I can't believe these people would actually pay a lawyer to vouch for what they do!
Go castlecops, go spyware warrior. I also agree with everyone wishing the spyware community were more focused. As far as I can tell, the antivirus community has long been united, and shares info whenever they can. Spyware is newer, yes, but getting everyone on board will surely help even more. And, as much smack talk as some have on MS, their (Giant) Anti-Spy "community" idea is one of the best ways I've ever heard of to combat these threats.
Just my 2 1/2 cents. |

While this may seem like a spam issue, the real problem here is the use of legal (or pseudo-legal?) threats. I knew it! What we're dealing with is what those anti spam activists in the newsgroup news.admin.net-abuse.email call a "cart00ney". Legal threats coming from spammers (and in this case also spyware vendors [I dare ya to sue me, Mr. Hopkins!]) are always bogus and have no merit. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle. Very true, but I'm sure the website has taken this into account by logging unique IP Addresses, in case such a poll can stand up in court, for example. That said, by default any proxy server that was used to submit a vote should be void. |

Here's a link we should also be aware of lest we forget others who have been a warrior against these things on behalf of computer users:
C|Net: See you later, anti-Gators?
»news.com.com/2100-1032_3-5095051.html
And yes, C|Net make the WhenU connection.
Meanwhile, the courts have smiled on a company that operates a similar ad network. Last month, WhenU survived a legal challenge brought against it by moving company U-Haul after WhenU served ads for U-Haul's competitors on top of U-Haul Web pages.
Eagle declined to comment on other specific spyware-busters, such as the New York City-based Enigma Software Group or InterMute, in Braintree, Mass. Those companies have advertised that they can rid computers of Gator--but their Web sites no longer mention the software. Eagle said he could not talk about ongoing actions.
Enigma Software Group could not be reached for comment. InterMute, which previously has spoken openly against Gator, declined to comment.
"Companies like Gator are the Goliath that average computer users are up against in the war for online privacy," Ed English, CEO of InterMute, said last month in an interview with CNET News.com.
Gator said it would take on its critics on a case-by-case basis.
"There are going to be detractor sites," Eagle said. "What we can do is focus on education and getting the word out there. We have discussions on this topic whenever we need to." |

KyeU join:2003-12-31 Canada 1 edit | reply to eburger68 I've been reading some of the comments on the SlashDot article ( »slashdot.org/yro/05/02/23/183024···8&tid=17 ), and there are some that give me a warm feeling inside:
quote: Subject: Does iDownload need a problem? I'll give them one.
As a Federal Government IT Manager, I have a problem with software that sits on a machine and collects information. Any application that can track a government employee's use of a workstation falls into the espionage law areas.
It would be interesting that as a Federal Agency, we deemed these programs malicious software, and seek Federal action against the companies who make these applications with a C&D of our own. Spyware constitutes spying. Without clear permission from the user, we shoud be fighting these companies on our own front.
Stay tuned.

quote: Subject:No Mercy for Spyware and Spammers
Spyware and Spammers are getting exactly what they have coming to them when they get deleted or blocked. If we choose to blacklist them or delete them for abusive behavior on our networks and computers, which are after all our property, then that is our choice and our right. If other people choose to agree with us and honor our blacklist then that is also their choice and their right. If I were one of those anti-spyware authors or spamhaus I would tell the spyware vendors and spammers, none too politely, to take their cease and desist letter and stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

They may seem small, but look at how it has spread. (Even to SlashDot).
An interesting thing pointed out (Originally on SlashDot, full of thinkers ^_^):
iDownload has used the ICSA Labs name without authorization to sell their ripoff antivirus software, called Virus Hunter.
They've seemingly ripped Bit Defender's software also.
This means that they (iDownload) themselves could get a Cease and Desist letter from CyberTrust, if not Bit Defender. They could even get sued.
This could turn the tables on iDownload as they have brought all this attention to themselves.
Real smart. |

Is there a relationship between BitDefender and Virus Hunter? Yes, according to the Technology Integration section of the BitDefender Web site, which lists Virus Hunter as a reference on a list that includes legitimate companies like GFI, Laplink Software, and Sunbelt Software. In fact, Virus Hunter is identical to BitDefender Standard except for a few logos. See for yourself:
