imrfPremium join:2002-06-06 Utica, MI | reply to DaveDude They had a HD Tivo at CES, but it still requires you to rent 2 CableCards from the cable company for it to even work. But it will be similar to the HD DirecTivo, costing probably $1000 to start plus the subscription fee. |

Each tuner (TV, PVR or other device) need a cablecard and each cable card given to the same customer can have a different channels authorized. So let's think about it: you'll become more dependant on these card and your cable company will be able to extra charge you... -- demagogue \DEM-uh-gog\, noun: 1. imrfPremium join:2002-06-06 Utica, MI | reply to Corvus Only right now each tuner requires a CableCard. Next year, Multi-Stream CableCards will be out, which allow for two-way communication, and probably dual tuner support. As for pricing, the FCC has already taken care of that, as they have told the cable companies that the cost of a CableCard must be less that the price of a digital converter. They asked that they not cost more than $2.50, for the first card rental, and they all have done that. |

imrfPremium join:2002-06-06 Utica, MI | That would be the smartest thing to do. There is no point in releasing a one-way box. Only time will tell if they make a HD Tivo or go under.
They really need to strike up talks with Scientific Atlanta, since Motorola bought Ucentric, and offer SA a reasonable price to license their software. I read somewhere a long time ago, that is the reason why neither SA or Moto use Tivo software, because Tivo was trying to charge too much, so they passed on Tivo software. |

Plus Tivo downloads the guide thru the internet or phonelines. Plus Tivo needs to revamp itself, Replay is alot better, and has alot cleaner interface. If Tivo added the options to access VOD and PPV stuff if/when they make a CableCard based HD unit, it can easily do it. But it's up to Tivo to make their software do it, the question is will they when the time comes. |

imrfPremium join:2002-06-06 Utica, MI | If they want to they can, whether they do or not is a different story. If they want to take away some of the market share from Motorola and SA they need to since VOD and PPV are popular things to have access to. |
