cablecard ????

Maybe they should build a BETTER cablebox with tivo, and use cablecard. I would rather buy my equipment then rent it from the cable company.

They had a HD Tivo at CES, but it still requires you to rent 2 CableCards from the cable company for it to even work. But it will be similar to the HD DirecTivo, costing probably $1000 to start plus the subscription fee.

People don't seems to realize how cablecards can screw the customer. Here's how:

Each tuner (TV, PVR or other device) need a cablecard and each cable card given to the same customer can have a different channels authorized. So let's think about it: you'll become more dependant on these card and your cable company will be able to extra charge you...

Possibly. They have never confirmed that it will be out. They said they are hoping it will be out by the end of 2006.

Only right now each tuner requires a CableCard. Next year, Multi-Stream CableCards will be out, which allow for two-way communication, and probably dual tuner support. As for pricing, the FCC has already taken care of that, as they have told the cable companies that the cost of a CableCard must be less that the price of a digital converter. They asked that they not cost more than $2.50, for the first card rental, and they all have done that.

honestly i would prefer tivo to hold off with releasing their dual tuner cablecard box uuntil they can make it compatible with 2 way cards

That would be the smartest thing to do. There is no point in releasing a one-way box. Only time will tell if they make a HD Tivo or go under.

They really need to strike up talks with Scientific Atlanta, since Motorola bought Ucentric, and offer SA a reasonable price to license their software. I read somewhere a long time ago, that is the reason why neither SA or Moto use Tivo software, because Tivo was trying to charge too much, so they passed on Tivo software.

Too little too late. By then competitors will be firmly entrenched.

Why would they need 2 way, Tivo wont be able to order movies thru the interface? Plus Tivo downloads the guide thru the internet or phonelines. Plus Tivo needs to revamp itself, Replay is alot better, and has alot cleaner interface. Althought i am considering Myth-tv...

with 2 way cards a tivo could be able to order ppv and probably ondemand content

if they ever get the netflix service going on tivo, the 2 way card won't matter though

On-demand features are set-top dependant, not generic.

Our company currently use MediaHawk VoD solution from Concurrent and after some researchs, I found out that there's already a Korean network build by Motorola using cablecards and Mediahawk VoD solution.

Yes, the two-way cards will do everything the current digital boxes from the cable company can do. If Tivo added the options to access VOD and PPV stuff if/when they make a CableCard based HD unit, it can easily do it. But it's up to Tivo to make their software do it, the question is will they when the time comes.

Are you sure? All interactive options or only PPV and VoD?

If they want to they can, whether they do or not is a different story. If they want to take away some of the market share from Motorola and SA they need to since VOD and PPV are popular things to have access to.
