Re: Direct TV and High Definition question...

I thought that I read somewhere that DirecTV would upgrade any equipment for free? Not true?
D* has not made an official announcement how they are going to handle the transaction from the current HD hardware to the new.
This is what I read also, insiders are advising that current HD STB owners will be able to upgrade the equipment for free but they do not know about the HD Tivos owners.

Directv and Dish will never be able to compete with cable, because with cable i can get a DVR for $12.95 a month, vs a $1000 upfront charge.
Speculation is that D* will lease the new MPEG4 HD STBs and DVR for a monthly fee. Nothing official though.

I wonder if they will tack another year on your contract for doing the upgrade.

Of course... would not have any other way.

The best that the retention dept. would offer was a $200 discount and some free programming for a while. I just can't justify paying $800 or a HD PVR when I can get one from my cable provider for free and pay the same or less per month as I do now with DTV.

That being said, I do like DTV and my 2 UTV boxes so I will probably just wait a while to see what happens when DTV comes out with their new equipment.

That sounds like the best offer D* gives out for the HD-TiVo. As I said, some people look at that and add the credit plus the free programming together and call it say a $400 discount.

I did what you're considering: Got an HD-DVR from Time Warner for $4.99/month. Because of the "buy back" offer they have for satellite customers, I'm paying the same as I was paying Dish Network, but for quite a bit more programming. I had AT120 with Dish and my monthly cost was $45. With TW, I've got a similar lineup + (2) premium movie channels + my locals in High-Definition + TNT-HD and Discovery HD Theatre. This is only for (2) years though..... Maybe by then Dish or DirecTV will be leasing HD-DVRs and we might switch back.

I called and wanted a hd-dvr and said I would go to dish/cable and they gave me $250.00 credit and 6 months free
