Before all this hoopla, iDownload was pretty much ignored; we knew their software was crap, but our anti-malware programs took care of it, so we didn't think anything of them.

Now that they've poked the hornet's nest, the howls of indignation will echo loud and long throughout the 'net, and they have irretrievably destroyed any chance of staying under the radar for good. If previously they were listed in a tiny section of the malware shitlist, now every Tom, Dick, and Harry knows about them.

Excellent move, morons! How does it feel to be the next Gator? "OMG we're not malware plz remove us from your list kthxbai!" REJECTED.

you're (wildly) overestimating how loud our collective screeching rings in the din of a very, very--no, extremely large marketplace. things that are slashdotted & dissected in forums all over the net, & even ones which gain a degree of dissemination through borderline mainstream media like wired.com or cnet still do not reach a vast majority of casual end users. if it were otherwise, we would've seen significant changes in patterns of online behavior--a truly mass exodus from ie, for starters, but other trends as well.

there's no question that idownload's bluff backfired, but that has to do more w/ the sheer incompetence it put on display (a law team incapable of spelling or deploying basic legal terminology, for example). in the broader world of non-security specialists/hobbists, however i seriously doubt this whole incident ever happened.
