JTRockvilleData HoPremium,MVM join:2002-01-28 Rockville, MD | How many jobs will Lafayette's network provide? I couldn't find information about how many jobs Lafayette's network would provide. Does anyone know?
Wouldn't jobs for Lafayette's network remain local, and not be subject to corporate threats? |

Bell South may cut the jobs but they will at least need to hire more people for there other centers to cover the load - it just wont be in Lafayette. Lafayette will just hire more people for thier network. -- www.pulsetoday.com -- marketing forums! |

Re: How many jobs will Lafayette's network provide? Well someone will need to perform the hands-on support for the system, but there is nothing to say this will not be out-sourced, too, and to technicians already in the community (meaning no new jobs).
I am a lot more concerned with the origin of the Muni initiative. Was there a public vote? Who in the local government was the qualified individual(s)? To me, I see a rat in the closet and I am betting its the hardware manufacturer(s) like Nortel, Lucent, Redback, Alcatel, etc., etc., etc.
It would be an easy sales pitch to the local governmental idiots (unqualified public workers) that the supplier of the network elements and trunk facilities can be 100% (or damn near 100%) out-sourced (ahem, "managed") and no need to worry about hiring from the local civil-servent channels.
If I were a resident of Lafayette I would want a cheaper broadband solution. Seriously, who wouldn't? But I would be gravely concerned with the intelligence of those local government officials spending money from the coffers I contribute to. Was there any decision-making based on a thorough public opinion? What safe-guards are there that decisions are being made wisely? How much kick-back is being made by the infrastructure supplier and any city officials?
Only when the interest of the residents are protected will I feel comfortable about my city dollars being spent on a muni effort or anything else. But its an easy jesture for a company like Nortel, Lucent, Alcatel, etc., etc., etc. to be losing telco business to to strike out by attracting muni deals.
In this game I wonder if its not just the residents of Lafayette that are the pawns. |

 | It has been stated that a support staff of about 40 will be hired locally, and that the support will stay right here in Lafayette. There was not a public vote yet, but there will be after the court decision made in Bellsouth's favor. As I mentioned earlier, I am worried by a public vote because of the enormous misinformation campaign that will be made by incumbents. |

| reply to ColdFiltered From this article, I'd say the residents of Lafayette aren't "pawns" at all. The plan looks like it's very well thought out, has minimal risk, and has the potential to create "explosive economic growth":
Opponents are exaggerating LUS plan risks (theadvisor.com)
The article also mentions something about the jobs that will be created, but it doesn't say how many:
"LUS is capable of recruiting people with the necessary expertise to provide quality service. In fact, the jobs that will be created have the potential to keep our young people with strong technical skills in Lafayette. Too many have left us." |

Do we believe the incumbents that like to make promises but seldom actually deliver? Or do we trust the local government that uses eminent domain to throw old people out of their homes to build shopping centers?

 | OK, you've convinced me, I'll vote for the government thieves. |
