Re: [TWC] Roadrunner DNS... Holy Crap

The only way I could get here now was to go on RR dialup. The RR DNS servers can't find the site.

In Hawaii, Tuesday night was horrible. No one could get anywhere. The two DNS servers were above capacity all evening.

Oceanic TW finally realized that there was a critical situation and asked the Orange RDC for an immediate extra DNS server. As of early Friday morning Hawaii has THREE DNS servers. That has helped considerably but I am still seeing considerable speed fluctuation and tonight even when my Ping Plotter showed connectivity again to dslr, I could not get here for the past hour, although others who posted about the outage over at Wilders Security could, I had to go on dial up to get here. That is really irritating.

With respect to 404 errors, you may wish to read RFC 2616. Your dislike of RR is getting in the way of your understanding.

Similarly, RR and DNS problems have nothing to do with your difficulties in reaching this site. It was under attack.

I know it was under attack. I was on the site when it went down. I was running Ping Plotter to it. I have watched the whole incident. But that has nothing to do with the point I was making. I could not get to this site on RR but could on dial up which uses AOL numbers (connection) and routing and doesn't use RR DNS servers. (Going on RR dialup is like old times for me as I had AOL before I got RR and I see the same routing on RR dialup as I did on AOL and use the same AOL phone number I used to on AOL). The extra DNS server Hawaii RR has now is clearing up a lot of our network problems but before we got it, from Jan 31 (the day the Orange RDC pushed the new speed to Hawaii modems) to last Friday, I got to sites on RR dial up that I could not reach on RR and this problem was frequent. I was using dial up a lot.

Mele20-->I think what he means is you're confusing the issue of getting 404's with them being DNS problems (the two are not related, as we've said before).

Juggalo-->Just because you can ping something, doesn't mean it's primary service is operational.

solved all my dns problems with a new rca dcm425 modem. swapped out the old pcx1000 at TWC on 23rd between madison and park ave.

while youre there use their IP Phone on display to call all your friends in Canada and the PR, it says 3min limit but you can talk all day, or until the security dude blows your cover.

Re: [TWC] Roadrunner DNS Addresses

Those Verizon DNS servers have been great, but now they are getting slower. I sometimes get 404's, and it takes about 5 seconds to look something up. I plan to try some other DNS server out.

Thanks a lot for these DNS servers. I have been getting killed from 7pm - 10pm or so in High Point, NC. Hope this resolves the issues I've been having (slow to no access... tracert failing with unable to resolve target system name messages, needing to click links multiple times to get them to go through, etc.)

What struck me as weird was that I could ping outside my WLAN from the router.. but not from my wired PC.

Thanks to funchords for the pointer over here.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but I released and renewed my lease through my router and I noticed an increase in speed with the RR DNS servers. Maybe yours has not automatically updated itself. Try this.

You actually get a lease? I never do, I just get a series of warnings and errors in event viewer regarding DHCP lease for one week (I have lease renewal set for once a week in the router) and then I get a private address and then the process starts again.

RoadRunner used to be reliable the couple years I have used them, now the past few months they have really gone down hill.

This DNS thing is still a problem for me. I switched to different DNS servers which helped for a while, now the problems seems like its back again.

And also now when I try switching DNS servers, I get a *very* long delay before I can use the internet again. Almost as if RoadRunner is trying to prevent this.

I would find it hard to believe they aren't aware of whats going on, considering that it appears the whole country using RoadRunner is having this problem.

What exactly does it say? I had a DHCP error back on the 27th but I think that is when RR was down.

You can use dnscache to solve your problems with RR. It works really well.

Would there be any advantage to adding more then 2 dns servers? Such as ALL of these..

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6

Or is adding 2 just as good as adding them all?

This may depend on the OS or DNS client, but in many cases where multiple DNS servers are listed, the one at the top of the list is always used unless it fails to return a response in a set amount of time (typically 5 seconds, if memory serves me correctly). In the case of said non-response (note that this is different from simply not finding an address in response to your query), it would move on to the next DNS server on the list and so on.

So, if your DNS implementation works like this (such as with Windows), having the 6 DNS servers would help if the first 5 were all down.

Hope this helps...
