Re: [Rant] My 2005 Ford Escape Escapade & general experiences

Yeah nothing beats a Japanese car. After that disastrous Escort, I vowed that would be my last American car. I bought a Mazda and have been driving it for ten years and 165,000 miles. Unfortunately, since I bought that Mazda, Ford began making more of their parts, so that rules them out in the future. Mine was made in Japan but I think Ford builds a lot of them now (correct me if I am wrong here).

Fords and GMs are the biggest pieces of crap ever. I should have learned my lesson with my 76 Mustang II, which I had to junk at only four years old--the entire inner fenders rusted away and the engine fell out :-( I remember trying to slather bondo on the doors when it was just three years old.

I am close to getting a new car--it will be a Honda or Toyota, most likely.

Except German machinery. Of all the cars I've ever owned, my Mercedes was the best. I miss that car.

But I'm being OT.

David See Profile, I can totally understand your distaste with this dealer, but it may be worth writing a few well-targeted letters to Ford corporate, the local BBB, and any TV stations with consumer reporters. Trading it is only going to cost you a fortune in depreciation.

Yes Ford owns Mazda. That's why the Tribute and Escape are identical (almost).

(O/T)

Well let's see...almost all Toyota's sold in the country are made here...same for Honda...so who makes the parts for these cars?

There can be a lemon no matter what brand you buy, I have had the opposite experience, my Ford's have been rock solid with no issues. (But I have not bought the "cheap" Ford vehicles, outside my little Fiesta and Festiva - and they both ran until their complete destruction). My Saturn was a dream, no issues and fantastic gas mileage, just very noisy. My German VW Passat (1992) was a nightmare that sucked money out of my account for 7 years. My Subaru ran great. My wife's Honda Accord was incredibly reliable until it hit 180,000 miles. My mother's Toyota (made in Tennessee) has been doing well now on past 160k. My brother's Toyota (built in Japan) was terrible. My father had issues with his Fords. My sisters Escort was nasty bad. Her Dodge Omni was so bad it was a joke, until it spontaneously combusted one day, then it was not such a funny car. My current 2002 Expedition is about the best vehicle I have ever owned (minus the gas mileage).

Now days, if you do not have a lemon, do basic preventative maintenance, the cars should run very well. IMO. Look into the details, "almost" all vehicles are built very well.

Now servicing them to keep them running - different issue. Don't believe me - well consider Honda. Very reliable. Except that little issue with the CR-V where the oil change causes a fire. Why? Because the technicians are changing the stuff properly. Not because the car is bad. This can and does happen with many cars. Honest dealers take care of their customers, and their vehicles. YMMV. But IMO, with a few exceptions, you can obtain a reliable car from most places. Maybe not Lexus good, but good. I can guarantee you that anyone with a 2002 Lexus\Mercedes\BMW has had the same repairs I have had on my Expedition. Does that mean that Ford is better than Lexus or nice Germans? Nope! But it sure does mean that all Ford's are not bad. And in my case, my vehicle does beat a Japanese vehicle.:D (Well, excpet that awesome 12mpg that I get around town )

It depends on the model, but to see for sure, go look at a car on a dealer's lot. The window sticker breaks it down where the car is made, including the parts.

Get back to me when your car has 165,000 miles on it. Sure, most NEW cars are fine, unless its a lemon. But its when they start to hit around 70,000 miles that the difference between Japanese and American show.

My car looks older--it has a few dings on it. It runs great though. All I do is change the oil--as far as engine related-repairs I have done two things in its entire life--change the timing belt and replace the alternator. Thats it. It is the most no-maintenance car I've ever owned. Most American cars dont even make it to that mileage and if they do, you will be fixing it every other day.

I'm quite proud of my '88 Honda Prelude Si. I bought it used with ~50,000 miles on it and drove it 'til 246,000 miles when the clutch went out. I decided it was done and parked it in the garage for two years 'til a neighbor bought it. He put a new battery in it and it cranked for about (3) seconds (whereas it normally fired up instantly) and it started.

Well I guess I will have to wait and see. My Expedition only has 45k. But My 94 Explorer Sport model I kept till 117k and I never had a single major repair. Maybe that was the exception, or maybe they (Ford/GM) just make much better trucks than cars. Only our Passat (Crap city), Accord (Great), and the Explorer (Great), have I ever kept over 100k, other cars I have traded in I guess before they hit the wall. Planning on keeping the Expedition so we will see, and my wife REALLY wants an Escape, so despite the OP issues, that may be the next vehicle we get. The dealer here though has always been real responsive to any minor issues, so hopefully I would not have the problems the OP has had.
