One thing to keep in mind is after you make a change, you have to go to the status page and click "connect." Provided you've got your username and password typed in correctly from your ISP, everything should connect.

Additionally, you might want to have your ISP assign you a static ip address, and you also might want to sign up with a dynamic dns provider. I use www.webreactor.net (free dns) and you can have an account issued and ready to use within 3 minutes. I did these two things because I noticed that my provider kept changing ip's every 24hrs and my router kept dropping its connection. Now, when the ip changes, people can still connect to my ftp server, alleviating me from reconfiguring every morning.

Since then, I've had no problems and I'm using the original firmware that the router came with. Once you've found a baseline for your network, try these couple of things and see if that helps (laffalot and I bought our WAG54G's around the same time).
