Is that true and why? Yes, it is still good. There was some recent controversy about their delisting of WhenU, however, they have since provided a stand-alone removal tool if you suspect you have WhenU on your system. I'm not sure you need to read 700+ posts to figure that out, but, Adaware SE Person remains one of the most effective (free) tools available for removal of spyware from your PC. There is a fresh update today (actually came out yesterday). Make sure you have this one: »www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.ph···ic=60143
Spybot Search & Destroy is another often recommended free progarm you should have in your arsenal of Antispyware tools. »www.safer-networking.org/
Another free Antispyware product, though still in Beta, Microsoft's free Antispyware is getting some good reviews as well. You may want to try it out. »www.microsoft.com/athome/securit···ult.mspx
Just be careful it still has some false positives and a few bugs in some of the features, so ask before deleting items if you have any questions.

It has an article called "Spyware Stoppers".
I'm not saying this report is gospel, or that I agree with everything in it by any means, but some interesting reading on the topic none the less.
I personally still like and use Ad-Aware, regardless of the recent controversy. I also use Spybot and my new favorite "Microsoft AntiSpyware". (Formally "Giant" as you know).
The general consensus, both in the article and here in the Forums, is that no one app gets everything, so an "arsenal" so to speak is the best defense.
Also interesting to note that Microsoft's Antispyware was not included in the chart because it is beta and just coming out as PC World was "completing testing".
HOWEVER, they really liked it claiming it "looks Like a Winner" and had detected "91% of the Adware/Spyware in their test suite".
It's a fairly long article, but some interesting reading none the less....again, I don't necessarily endorse their findings (nor do I disagree with them). Simply posting it here for you "reading pleasure".

I like this statement:
"We used HijackThis along with the Add or Remove Programs feature in Windows XP's Control Panel. We were surprised to find that nearly all of the 45 adware/spyware apps on our infected system had a corresponding uninstaller in Add or Remove Programs. (To use these uninstallers effectively requires that you know which programs they belong to; it's not always easy to tell.) By using the uninstallers and following up with HijackThis--which identified and deleted active components not removed by the uninstallers--we obtained our best score yet, killing off 100 percent of all active components of the adware and spyware infecting our machine. We obtained the same result when we followed a CounterSpy scan with HijackThis. No other combination gave us 100 percent--the WinTools processes that the other scanners left in place thwarted our cleanup efforts, and HijackThis was unable to stop the processes on its own."
I love Hijackthis. I think its the best little utility there is. I have not used Counterspy. I'll be checking it out soon. | | jabarnutLight Years AwayPremium,MVM join:2005-01-22 Galaxy M31 kudos:2 | said by christos: Thank you for posting the link! No problem christos
And I agree about HijackThis....I really like and use it too. As the article states though, (and I'm sure many here already know), you want to be sure you know what you are doing before playing around with HijackThis.
Definitely an awesome tool to have though. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. | | |

1 cookie! | 19 registry entries AFTER the remover was ran! |
Ad-Aware detected a cookie! Uninstalled BearShare, ran the WhenU Remover provided by Lavasoft... informed me that WhenU was detected and asked if I wanted to remove it(DUH!) It then told me to restart so as to remove anything that may still be running. Restarted. Ran Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

The remover is defective. The definitions lists are also defective.
Christos, I don't blame the administrators of the forums. It's the technical department and the CEO(s) who should be blamed.
Why they didn't include WhenU in their newest definition list, I don't know. But it will make a lot of people even more mad. | | dadkinsCan you do Blu?Premium,MVM join:2003-09-26 Hercules, CA kudos:18 2 edits | Hilarious, well... sort of. Kind of sad too.
Some people are still defending Lavasoft's decisions and Ad-Aware's viability/TAC System. I see this as another strike against them.
No problem, for me at least. I have MANY other ways to clean ALL forms of crap off of a computer.
EDIT: This little experiment I did, also doesn't look too good for WhenU's hint of a turn-around. Leaving that much crud in the registry cannot be considered User Friendly. Not being listed in Add/Remove Programs is not good as well.
Take care people! David | | | I was wondering about useing an older version of ad-aware instead. Functionality
WhenU.com's Save! software shows you relevant coupon offers, contextual information and services as you surf the Web. Save! attempts to display offers at the moment when they are most relevant to you. Offers and information are displayed in the form of interstitials ("pop-up ads") and various other ad formats.
The Save! software selects which ads and offers to display to individual users based on several factors, including: which Web pages you visit, search terms you use while searching online, content of the Web pages you view and your local zip code (if you have supplied it). Save! ads and offers are delivered in a separate, independent window controlled by WhenU.com, are not endorsed or affiliated with anyone other than WhenU.com and may in fact be competitive with some of the sites visited by the user while online.
Save! software enables users to receive advertising-supported versions of many popular software applications for free. Use of Save! is required to continue using these applications for free. As a result, Save! cannot be uninstalled from your computer's Control Panel independently. In order to completely remove Save! from your computer, you must uninstall all of the Save!-supported software from your computer. Once you do so, your Save! software will automatically be uninstalled as well.
The License
The software is licensed to you for your personal, non-commercial use only. Other than the rights expressly granted to you hereunder, no other right is granted to you. Without limitation, you may not: (a) modify or create any derivative works of the software or documentation; (B) decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for the software; or, without limitation, redistribute, sublicense, or otherwise transfer rights to the software.

WhenU.com reserves the right to periodically update and/or upgrade the software at the company's discretion. Your installation of the software indicates your acceptance of potential future updates and/or upgrades to the software.
The information and services provided by the software and/or WhenU.com are similarly provided on an "As Is" basis, without warranty of any kind. The accuracy and reliability of any information content or services provided by the software and or WhenU.com should be independently verified by you as the user prior to making purchase decisions and or any other decisions based on such information content and services.
Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event will WhenU.com or its agents be liable for any damages arising from the use of or inability to use the software, including, without limitation, damages to users' systems and/or software and/or data, computer failure or malfunction, computer virus transmission, performance delays or communication failures, security breaches or any and all other damages or losses.
Privacy Statement
By downloading the Save/SaveNow software ("the software"), you give permission to WhenU.com ("WhenU") to display relevant contextual information and offers. The software selects which ads and offers to show you based on several factors, including: which Web pages you visit, search terms you use while searching online, content of the Web pages you view and your local zip code (if you have supplied it).
The software protects your privacy by uploading a database of content in small chunks to your desktop and then determining on your desktop whether to retrieve information from WhenU or third-party servers. To protect your privacy, the same database of content is sent to all desktops. Decisions regarding which ads to retrieve to an individual desktop are all processed on the individual user's desktop and isolated from WhenU servers. In this way, WhenU is able to deliver to you relevant coupons, information and advertisements without sending all of your browsing activity back to WhenU and without establishing any profile about you (even anonymously) on WhenU servers.
Your privacy is also protected in the following manner:
1. Your personally-identifiable information is not required in order to use the software. WhenU does not know your individual identity and does not attempt to discern it in any way. 2. As you surf the Internet, your "clickstream data" (i.e. a log of all the sites you visit) is not transmitted to WhenU or any third party server. 3. WhenU does not assemble any personally-identifiable browsing profiles of you or your individual machine. 4. WhenU does not assemble any anonymous machine-identifiable browsing profile of you or your machine. 5. WhenU does not track which ads and offers you see as an individual user all of our analysis and tracking of ads is done in the aggregate.
The software does send back a limited amount of information from your desktop in order to count the number of users in our network and optimize the performance and relevancy of the ads. For example, the software may send WhenU a communication that includes information about the webpage you were viewing when you saw or clicked on a particular ad.. WhenU has intentionally designed these communications back to WhenU to be highly protective of user privacy, in the following ways:
a. Each individual desktop is assigned an anonymous, unique machine ID. This machine ID is used only to enable WhenU to count unique, active desktops in the network. The machine ID is not used to determine which ads to serve individual users or to create browsing profiles of users. b. When ads are requested and/or displayed by the software, impressions and click-throughs, including the factor (e.g., such as the URL, the keyword, or the search term, or some combination thereof) that caused the ad to be displayed are reported to WhenU. To protect your privacy and prevent WhenU or any third party from assembling individual user profiles or knowing which Web sites you visit, your unique machine ID is intentionally excluded from the limited communications sent back to WhenU that may include a URL or such other browsing-specific information.
The Save! software does not place any cookies on your desktop. The Save! software does occasionally make use of session cookies, transient cookies, for the transmission of information between the softwares windows. Session cookies are stored in temporary memory, not retained after the browser is closed, and do not collect information, personal or general, from the users computer. It is possible that a third party advertising on our network might place a cookie on your desktop. If you wish to opt-out from third party cookies, please click on the following link and follow the instructions: http://www.networkadvertising.org/optout_nonppii.asp
WhenU.com may update its privacy policy for the software at any time. WhenU is committed to serving highly relevant, contextual coupons and offers, while still providing consumers with industry-leading privacy protection. More information about the software is available here, or for any further questions about our privacy policy please email privacy@whenumail.com.
In add/Remove programs, users can remove Bear and then Save! Both removed without any issue and and nothing left behind.
1. Bearshear makes takes you to their EULA, you must accept or cancel and then if you accept, it shows WhenU.com ELA. If you accept, you get the install, if not it will not install anything.
Legal bundling software does not create uninstaller for the 3rd party adware they install.
No group that runs bundling software operations gives their codes to paying 3rd party adware clients to remove their software. I see nothing amiss and both in EULA and the installations along with the removal via add/remove programs I find nothing that dictates us detecting them right now.
The free install is a small link with the pay pro version big links so if a user goes and installs it is their own fault as it is clearly advertised what will occur.
supplement added:
said by Mar 7 2005, 09:31 AM: Also from their EULA:
quote: ...In order to completely remove Save! from your computer, you must uninstall all of the Save!-supported software from your computer....
What that means is if you want to be rid of WhenU.com software, you need to uninstall the software that installed it first. Which makes sense since it is the Bearshare that in order to continue to run would possibly re-install whenU.com if it found it missing since Bearshare is the bundler.
