Coincidentally, I just received the April addition of PC World.
It has an article called "Spyware Stoppers".

I'm not saying this report is gospel, or that I agree with everything in it by any means, but some interesting reading on the topic none the less.

I personally still like and use Ad-Aware, regardless of the recent controversy.
I also use Spybot and my new favorite "Microsoft AntiSpyware". (Formally "Giant" as you know).

The general consensus, both in the article and here in the Forums, is that no one app gets everything, so an "arsenal" so to speak is the best defense.

Also interesting to note that Microsoft's Antispyware was not included in the chart because it is beta and just coming out as PC World was "completing testing".

HOWEVER, they really liked it claiming it "looks Like a Winner" and had detected "91% of the Adware/Spyware in their test suite".

It's a fairly long article, but some interesting reading none the less....again, I don't necessarily endorse their findings (nor do I disagree with them).

Adaware SE is highly effective tool and should be used in conjunction with others of the same kind in any serious attempt at spyware removal. It is a great disservice to online community to discourage users from using Adaware SE.

So, where is this Uninstaller that is provided by Lavasoft?

I'm feeling kind of kamikaze today. I have just downloaded BearShare and would like to see if this uninstaller works... anyone have a link? I've looked in about all locations of Lavasoft.

Thanks dadkins for posting a real world example of what most of us thought would happen. How anyone can continue to "trust" Lavasoft with a staight face is beyond my ability to understand. Not in bed with WhenU? Yeah, right!

The remover is defective. The definitions lists are also defective.

Christos, I don't blame the administrators of the forums. It's the technical department and the CEO(s) who should be blamed.

Why they didn't include WhenU in their newest definition list, I don't know. But it will make a lot of people even more mad.

Hilarious, well... sort of. Kind of sad too.

Some people are still defending Lavasoft's decisions and Ad-Aware's viability/TAC System. I see this as another strike against them.

No problem, for me at least. I have MANY other ways to clean ALL forms of crap off of a computer.

EDIT: This little experiment I did, also doesn't look too good for WhenU's hint of a turn-around. Leaving that much crud in the registry cannot be considered User Friendly. Not being listed in Add/Remove Programs is not good as well.

I was wondering about useing an older version of ad-aware instead. Because, I think if they could remove When-u from there files why not when they release an update, instead of adding more things to scan for that they remove some things instead.

WhenU's (among others) slimy, dirtbag, greasy hooks are all over this poor soul's computer. Lavasoft messed up royally by removing detection for WhenU. Check out this guy's Hijack This log.

Functionality

WhenU.com's Save! software shows you relevant coupon offers, contextual information and services as you surf the Web. The Save! software selects which ads and offers to display to individual users based on several factors, including: which Web pages you visit, search terms you use while searching online, content of the Web pages you view and your local zip code (if you have supplied it). Save! ads and offers are delivered in a separate, independent window controlled by WhenU.com, are not endorsed or affiliated with anyone other than WhenU.com and may in fact be competitive with some of the sites visited by the user while online.

Save! software enables users to receive advertising-supported versions of many popular software applications for free. Use of Save! is required to continue using these applications for free. As a result, Save! cannot be uninstalled from your computer's Control Panel independently. In order to completely remove Save! from your computer, you must uninstall all of the Save!-supported software from your computer. Privacy Statement

In add/Remove programs, users can remove Bear and then Save!
Both removed without any issue and and nothing left behind.

1. Bearshear makes takes you to their EULA, you must accept or cancel and then if you accept, it shows WhenU.com ELA. If you accept, you get the install, if not it will not install anything.

Legal bundling software does not create uninstaller for the 3rd party adware they install.

No group that runs bundling software operations gives their codes to paying 3rd party adware clients to remove their software. I see nothing amiss and both in EULA and the installations along with the removal via add/remove programs I find nothing that dictates us detecting them right now.

The free install is a small link with the pay pro version big links so if a user goes and installs it is their own fault as it is clearly advertised what will occur.

What that means is if you want to be rid of WhenU.com software, you need to uninstall the software that installed it first. Which makes sense since it is the Bearshare that in order to continue to run would possibly re-install whenU.com if it found it missing since Bearshare is the bundler.
