Re: Microsoft Security Bulletin Revisions Last night: Performed byte->byte check - installed Intellipoint software vs. backup. Perfect.
This morning (to insure valid software/registry entries): Uninstalled Intellipoint. Deleted all files/folders. Dry cleaned, pressed, ironed registry. Reinstalled Intellipoint from direct MS DL.
Mouse now under control. Was using medium acceleration, now using none. Could MS patches have somehow altered system mouse acceleration sensitivity? Browsing stable with FF & IE. Can open separately or concurrently, and browse using both simultaneously, as before. Box no longer freezes (so far).
So it seems as if something related to mouse/system interaction was affected during patching process. What? He's on second but I don't know exactly. Cleaning then reinstalling mouseware appears to have improved the situation.
Going to wait a couple more days then try patching again. Or will I?
Another mystery of life. Thanks for all of your help. |

I experienced the same issue with 2 computers running W98SE. They were BSOD as they tried to draw the icons on startup. Once I uninstalled KB891711 they started without a problem. I didn't reinstall Intellipoint and they seem to run without a problem. Funny thing is that I installed said patch on a third W98SE box without any BSOD so far. Will wait and see before reapplying this patch. |

 | As I posted in the other link, no problems here. I installed the two new patches (KB891711 & KB888113) on my Win Me system last night. Everything is A-OK. |

| reply to SUMware Exactly describes the problem I had on WinMe. Wish I had seen this earlier. With KB891711.exe open my pc would crash every time I tried to open either FF or IE. Killing the process would then allow me to use either browser again. I have since uninstalled the patch and everything seems to be back to normal. |

I have 98SE with an Intellimouse Explorer mouse backed by IntelliPoint 4.1 software and although, as I said at the start of this thread, I applied both patches (888118 & 891711) soon after their release, I have not had any trouble whatsoever ~touches wood~ . -- Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy - Anonymous |

1 edit | reply to Goldengamego I figured out what had been causing my system to crash whenever I tried to open Internet Explorer or Firefox. I have Proxomitron Ver. Naoka-4.5 installed on my PC. It seems to be in conflict with and causing KB891771.exe to crash my PC whenever I tried to access the Internet. I've been in touch with MS (»Problem after MS update KB891711) and theyve forwarded my issue on to their Support Professionals. Ill pass any word along I hear from them concerning the problem.
In the meanwhile I'll stick with Proxomitrom and maintain control of my web-surfing experience. |

 | reply to SUMware said by SUMware:After installing both these updates this afternoon on 98SE, the cursor has moved eratically and my system has locked several times, internet access blocked, hard reboots required. I've uninstalled both patches, restored previous hlink.dll file, restored previous good registry, and still have problem. Uninstall does not fix problems. Should have known better than to DL MS patches immediately. Anyone else? Well not exactly but yeah i had problems too after installing the patch in question (kb891711)on a windows 98SE box
i have an optical microshaft intellimouse with a usb connector, i however had it plugged into the microshaft adapter which it comes with, which converts the USB connection into a standard round ibm ps-2 (keyboard style) connector
after installing the patch, my mouse was not detected at all and when i moved it, it would make an annoying gringing noise through the PC speaker
deciding that it would be entirely futile attempting to undo any kind of microshaft software entanglement, i removed the microshaft adapter from the microshaft mouse and plugged it directly into a free usb port, and rebooted,
fortunately this solved my particular problem. hope this is of some help to somebody somewhere
figures, microsoft mouse, microsoft adapter, microsoft windows, microsoft bug and microsoft patch, and they still cant work together

I've noticed the same thing running in the background on my WIN98 machine, and ran across this thread looking for info. Since nobody seemed to have a definitive answer, I decided to call their security support line.
Got with a tech support guy fairly quickly (!) and he explained that the KB891711 patch was not required for WIN98, even though the Windows Update service called it a critical update. He had me uncheck it in the Startup list on msconfig, and also remove it from the registry: Run Regedit, export a registry file to the desktop as a backup, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/
He had me look in both the "Run-" folder and "RunServices-" folders. KB891711 was in "RunServices-". Right-click and hit "delete." (As a bonus, I also noticed an entry for a piece of spyware in the same folders, and killed that, too.) Did a restart, and now it's no longer showing up in the Task Manager. Best MS tech support experience I've ever had. Now we just need to get them to update their online documentation to explain this more clearly. .."

Logiteck Trac-Ball erratic behaviour installed under generic MS mouse drivers under 98SE. Also issues now with Hauppague tv card drivers that did not exist before. Also issues with some video games with high graphics demands such as STEAM apps and other high demand video.
Am about to uninstall manually.
Whoever earlier mentioned "should have known not to immediately downloaded new updates" is correct. |
|
 | Have stopped it and removed folder and files and removed registry entries. Rebooted. TV card and mouse already seem smoother and so far no BSODs while pressing the system. Cursor no longer seems 'stuck' to parts of objects drawn on desktop such as WinTV, WinAmp or other apps. Typing is faster, no mysterious 'laggy' display of each letter appearing and BACKSPACE works much faster. I was wondering if all those odd things were related. I was almost ready for 'format/reinstall' marathon.
This was a bad update for my 98SE system! |

CudniLa Merma - VigiladoPremium,MVM join:2003-12-20 Someshire kudos:13 | The KB891711.exe caused problems on my comp but not as severe as what you reported. I didn't bother removing it, just removed it from startup. However there are also reports where the above update did not cause any problems and works as intended.
