I think the solution should be that the University give back the money they received when they sold the company the addresses, possibly reasonable court costs. Then they would be free to block the e-mails and site without any further obligations.
Of course this will never fly as it makes sense. -- I have two favorite sports teams, University of Michigan and whoever is playing Michigan State.
