Not being active in this thread, but have maintained an 'eye' on it, as one of my Rigs run Win98sec. Have not installed the dreaded KB891711 on the 98' Rig; but for an entirely different reason, perhaps. Before this thread started I loaded that patch on XP Pro, SP1 and immediately had a degradation in speed. So I'm certain this is the patch from hell, no matter the OS!

hoseknows Seemed to have a relatively succinct clue to a patch trouble ticket & surprised this was moot, to the security community. At least a reply, could have perhaps been in order.

Cheers

The agonizing thing in all this has been trying to get any response/acknowledgement from microsoft regarding this "patch from hell". Not only is their OS and web browser flawed, it turns out this "patch" to fix the problem has turned out to be flawed as well.
I'm just a end user so I'm basically at the mercy of what ever "fix" the geniuses there in Redmond come up with.. I just hope that they come up with a working solution to this soon.

Yeah, join the club, captn! I did dl KB888113 and this old tired 98se box remains good. Still waiting to see what the M$ gurus come up with in regards to KB891711. Sheesh.....can one say "customer service"? C'mon Redmond, you can do better than this!

I have Win ME and today went to Win Update, saw I was behind on updates, spent some time getting all (or most) of the critical ones, and now am suddenly having the same problems the above posts refer to. I don't have the Proxo (sp?) program. I keep getting BSOD with a very general error message saying I can press ENTER to return to Windows, and when I do that, everything is fine. For a bit. THen same thing again. I'm running an online casino poker game at the time, which probably is somehow related. It's really making things difficult. I do see this KB891711 in my running tasks list now, so I just ended task on it, and so far so good. I also disabled it in msconfig from startup list. I also see it in Add/remove progs, so guess I'll uninstall it from there. This is outrageous. Microsoft obviously knows of these issues by now, probably knew befor they released the update -- how could they NOT pull it? Or at least give a warning before you accept it from the updates. How dare they. I've read these same complaints all over many different forums once I started trying to figure out "what was wrong with my computer"! It's affected a LOT of people and it's not just some minor annoyance it's creating. At least now I know there really isn't anything wrong with my computer, it's just this program I just installed, and I don't even know what for -- interfering with what I'm trying to do -- sounds a lot like what our complaints are with spyware, doesn't it?

Patch Tuesday is just a few days away. Wanna bet MS won't issue a fix for this on Tuesday?

Now I usually run 2K and boy am I glad I stopped by.

Cleaning my sis-inlaws PC of nigh on 200 nasties on Adaware and spybot, I decided to get the MS updates for 98 box.

When I rebooted the thing hung like a goodun. So I got into safe mode and removed everything I had installed ... except the MS updates doh! I was fearing having to nuke the box but luckily I came here and chanced on these threads.

Job sorted, box is running well (well better than it was) and I have another reason to curse MS.

Cheers

Hey KiwiRack,

Some skeptics would suggest this is precisely what MS wants all of us to do.

I'm not suggesting that I can blame you. This latest 'Security Patch' fiasco really SUCKS, Big Time. I'm fortunate, in that I saw this thread prior to installing it from WU. The question now of coarse is, when is MS going to patch the patch. I'm guessing you understandably 'scrapped' W98 to avoid the vulnerabilities that W98,W98SE and WME are subjected to until MS releases an un-flawed Security Patch.

Yes. I had similar problem. After installing this patch, and attempting to either run IE OR, even open my Windows folder (by navigating through my computer icon), I would get a blue screen w/ error msg on it.

The only reason I even attempted to uninstall this patch was because I saw it running in the task manager and thought it seemed weird to actually see a "KB" task running..

Anyway, I uninstalled and seem fine now.. I think I'll take my chances with the hackers. Microsoft patches are more frightening to me...

Hi there. All updates issued are to protect the system. the problem here is...YOUR computer! UPGRADE!!! but if you choose to uninstall the update, be sure to use a up-to-date (meaning REGISTER it) Anti-Virus and firewall protection. On top of that, stay away from free porn and b/s add ons. Cheers!

I work for PCSafety and agree with coolza! By removing it from msconfig, you will still be protected!

"Eh? W98SE does not have AUTO UPDATING. What are you talking about?"... YES THERE IS.

Are we talking about the same thing? I think not. There is NO auto updating for 98SE. You must either go to WU and actively download the updates or you need (the preferred method I believe) to go to MS download site and download them to disk and then install each of them (and burn a copy while you are at it). You cannot passively auto update 98SE by turning on auto updates like you can (but IMO shouldn't) in XP. You have to actually do some work to get updates for 98SE. You can't be "lazy" like you can with XP and let the process be automatic. Auto updating is a stupid idea because if you allow that then you have no idea which patch is causing a problem. You should go to MS download site after reading the Technet Bulletins and get each patch separately and install only one at a time and use the computer for a while making sure everything is ok. Then download and install the next patch and use the computer, etc.

If there was auto updating for 98SE and I used it, I would have really had problems. I caught one important bug,(and was the first to report it to MS) and some lesser ones with patches for 98SE. I would have had no idea what my problem was if I had not patched the proper way as I described above but had just let them all install automatically (if that was possible on 98SE). What a mess that would have been on many occasions. XP is a step backwards in this regard. That is why I permanently disabled auto updating and never visit WU on XP Pro. I read the Bulletins and then go to MS download site (or Office, etc) and get the patches.

The only time WU is useful is if you have not burned a copy of all the patches and you have to reformat. But I never have needed to do that on 98SE and probably never will on XP since it is supposedly much more stable than 98SE.

You are probably correct, though in this case It's more than a '98 problem; It's the patch, as you noted. I won't run fast SDSL with a buggy patch. Although XP has other means of protection, '98 does not. it was nice having a small OS foot print and although once every 10 months -14 months a format was required to compensate for poor memory handling, It was simple and straight forward and did the job! What ticks me off is people paid for '98 and MS made an exorbitant amount of money from It's sale -It's bought and paid for and becoming a car with three wheels. The patch can be loaded on XP without excessive trauma, does slow the system down and I'm not experienced enough with XP to trouble shoot a 1.5g OS, but it won't run without issues on '98. I ended up loading it on the '98 Rig to see where the problem was, not stable enough to check it out; so I gave up & loaded WIN2K Pro, which does fine without the patch and with other means of protection.

Seems MS wants It's customers to become beta testers now, if that's the case then they better drop the price!

Cheers

Somehow I have a serious problem taking the word of anybody who posts anonymously to this board and is unregistered,
particularly someone purporting to be a MS Tech LMAO

Microsoft Technical Help via a telephone conversation had me uninstall this patch ..it wasn't my "choice" but advice from a genuine Microsoft Technician. He did ask if I was running updated antivirus software and had a firewall but that's just plain common sense if a person's online.

Microsoft's website states "Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me downloads for existing security issues will continue to be available through regular assisted-support channels at no charge until June 30, 2006."
..if you are in fact a MS Tech I would suggest you either register properly here at BBR's or get off these boards and get back to work and write us consumers a proper patch that doesn't crash our systems instead of suggesting that we spend our money on yet another wonderful OS!

Since when does microsoft post technical advice on second party bulletin boards? Hell Microsoft hasn't even addressed this very issue on their own website yet when asked over the phone their own technicians concede there was indeed a problem with this patch. Not once during my conversation with Microsoft was I ever told to "upgrade" nor was I told the problem was my "computer".

~Cheers~

Havent seen a problem since.

But the real odd thing is that if run windows update....
Its still listed there as a critical update for me.

If they know theres a problem with it and Win98...

Why is it still listed as a critical update???????????

Because support for 98 is half way support if that. Of course, they should have pulled the patch off WU until they have a redesigned patch. They would have for XP.

mamadi

@24.244.x.x

I have installed this on 3 different systems 98, 98SE and ME and all fail in regards to I-Explorer and windows explorer. Have anyone considered that MS may have wanted you to upgrade to their newer systems after creating endless problems with the older ones???;);)

Well...No more problems occure when you remove it.
